Bread, NAFDAC and Yobe: Know the Rules Before You Open the Doors
Bread is eaten within a day of baking, which is why food regulators watch bakeries closely. NAFDAC, the federal food and drug agency, publishes inspection guidelines for bread manufacturing. As they read, the master baker must be present when inspectors visit, bread may not contain potassium bromate or saccharin, and loaves must be packaged and labelled before they are sold or distributed. The guideline also treats each outlet separately, so inspection and listing are applied for outlet by outlet, and it describes the application as one made on a company letterhead, which makes a registered business name a practical starting point.
Enforcement in the north-east is real. In February 2021, NAFDAC’s North-East zonal office moved against an unregistered maize-flour outfit in Potiskum, citing misbranding, repackaging under other brands’ names and a lack of vitamin A fortification. Elsewhere in the region, NAFDAC has sealed bakeries in Maiduguri, and in September 2023 it closed eight bakeries in Bauchi State for failing hygiene or registration standards. We did not find a published clampdown aimed specifically at Yobe bakeries, so ask NAFDAC’s office what it currently expects for your premises and products, especially if you make cakes, snacks or sweets rather than bread. CAC registration gives you the business name; NAFDAC approval is a separate step.
What Falls Outside This Registration
- Printed copies of your certificate (you receive a soft copy and can print it locally whenever convenient)
- NAFDAC inspection, listing or product registration for your bakery, including packaging and labelling requirements, applied for through NAFDAC’s own channels and, per its bread guideline, outlet by outlet
- Staff health and hygiene requirements that NAFDAC sets for people working in food production
- Any state or local-government permits, premises approvals or levies that apply in your LGA — confirm these with the relevant local authority
- Trademark protection for your bread or cake brand name, which is handled by the Trademarks Registry and is separate from CAC registration
- Tax filings and any state or local levies that apply to your business (your TIN is included, but filing is a separate matter)
- Business bank account opening, which you do with your chosen bank once the certificate is in hand
- Annual returns in later years — a small, separate step we can help with when the time comes
Business Name or Limited Liability Company: Which Suits a Bakery?
| Business Name | Limited Liability Company | |
|---|---|---|
| Price (all-inclusive) | ₦35,500 | ₦65,500 |
| Protects personal assets? | No | Yes |
| What you receive | Certificate + Status Report + TIN | Certificate + Status Report + Memart + TIN |
| Typically suits | Home bakers, neighbourhood bakeries, cake makers and snack sellers | Larger production bakeries, wholesale suppliers, and owners with partners or investors |
A Business Name is usually enough when you are baking under your own name, selling at a shop, a market stall or by order, and need a registered name for invoices, orders and a bank account. A Limited Liability Company becomes worth considering when production grows, several people share ownership, or an investor or institutional buyer expects a company structure, since the business then stands separately from your personal assets. Plenty of bakers start with a Business Name and upgrade later.
Registering Bakeries Across All 17 Yobe LGAs
The price, documents and turnaround are the same wherever your bakery is based. We register bakery and confectionery businesses in every Local Government Area of Yobe State:

Potiskum and the southern LGAs
- Potiskum — the state’s largest city by population and a busy market town, with room for bread bakers, cake makers and wholesale suppliers
- Fika and Nangere — neighbourhood bakeries and local bread makers
- Gujba and Gulani — small-scale bakers and home-based confectioners
Northern Yobe
- Bade (including Gashua) — bakeries serving one of the state’s sizable market towns
- Nguru — bread bakers and pastry makers in another major market town
- Karasuwa, Machina and Jakusko — local bakeries and snack producers
- Bursari, Geidam, Yunusari and Yusufari — bakers and confectioners across the northern LGAs along the Niger border
If your bakery is anywhere in Yobe State, you are covered.
You Know the Dough; Leave the Paperwork to Us
A bakery’s day starts long before its customers wake up: the oven has to be hot before the first bake, flour and sugar deliveries have to be checked, orders have to be packed, and the Ramadan and Sallah rushes can double demand overnight. Add cake orders written on scraps of paper and customers who ask for a receipt, and the CAC portal is the last thing you want to wrestle with. Registering the business name is one task we can remove from your plate completely. Once it is done, your bakery trades under a recognised name that can appear on order forms, invoices and bank paperwork.
A Good Match If…
We’re not the right fit for everyone, and we’d rather say so — here’s who usually benefits most from working with us:
- You’d rather not spend the hour between the first bake and the morning rush working out CAC’s portal — the loaves are cooling, deliveries are due, and the oven doesn’t wait.
- You’re planning beyond the counter — from selling at your door or stall to supplying shops, schools and event caterers in Damaturu or Potiskum, or opening a second outlet.
- You want honest advice, not an upsell — if a Business Name covers your stage, that’s what we’ll recommend.
- You want things kept simple — your details, one payment, your certificate.
If this describes you, we’d be glad to take the paperwork off your hands.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does CAC registration cost for a bakery in Yobe State? ₦35,500 all-inclusive for a Business Name. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.
What do I get for the ₦35,500? The name search and reservation, the completed CAC filing, the government fee, your Certificate of Registration as a soft copy, a TIN and a CAC Status Report. No extra charges follow the payment.
How long does registration take? Usually 5–7 working days from the time your details and payment are in.
Is the price different in Damaturu, Potiskum or other LGAs? No. The price, documents and turnaround are the same anywhere in Yobe State.
Is a Business Name enough for a bakery or confectionery business? For most owner-run bakeries, cake makers and snack sellers, yes. It gives you the registered name you need to start trading under. Food-safety approvals from NAFDAC are a separate matter.
When does it make sense to start with a Limited Liability Company? If you are building a larger production bakery, sharing ownership with partners, or an investor or institutional buyer wants a company structure, the LLC route is worth considering from day one.
Can I upgrade from a Business Name to a Limited Liability Company later? Yes. Many bakers begin with a Business Name and convert as production and ownership grow. We can assist with the conversion.
Does CAC registration replace NAFDAC registration? No. CAC gives your bakery a registered business name. NAFDAC handles food-safety inspection and listing separately.
Do cakes, pastries and sweets need NAFDAC approval too? NAFDAC has a specific guideline for bread manufacturing and regulates packaged foods more broadly. Ask NAFDAC’s office whether your particular products are covered and what it requires, because we do not handle that step.
Does bread have to be wrapped and labelled? NAFDAC’s bread guideline states that bread must be packaged and labelled before it is sold or distributed. Check the current rules with NAFDAC before you start selling.
If I open a second bakery outlet, do I register again? One CAC registration covers your business as a whole. NAFDAC’s bread guideline, however, treats inspection and listing outlet by outlet, so confirm what each outlet needs.
Can I register a bakery, a cake shop and a snack line under one name? Yes. Describe the nature of business broadly, such as “bakery and confectionery: bread, cakes and pastries”. If you add a café or other food service, that part may need its own approvals.
I bake from home. Can I still register? Yes, as long as you have a business address in a Yobe State LGA to give. For food produced at home, ask NAFDAC what applies to your set-up.
Do I need a shop before I register? You need a business address and the LGA for the application. If you are still arranging premises, send the address you plan to use.
What should I write as the nature of business? Keep it simple and broad, for example “bakery and confectionery” or “bread, cake and pastry production”. We can help you word it when you send your details.
What if my proposed business name isn’t available? Send a backup name and we will check it right away. Having two or three options ready keeps things moving.
Is the TIN included? Yes. A Tax Identification Number is part of what you receive for the ₦35,500.
Will I get a printed certificate? You receive a soft copy, which you can print locally whenever you like.
How is the certificate delivered? As a soft copy sent to you on WhatsApp.
Can I open a business bank account with the certificate? Yes. A CAC certificate is one of the main documents banks ask for when opening a business account, along with your ID and other details.
Will a CAC certificate help me win orders from schools, offices or event planners? Organisations often ask for proof of registration before placing regular or bulk orders, so the certificate is a useful document to have. It does not guarantee any order.
Does registering my business name protect my brand as a trademark? No. CAC registration gives you a registered business name, while trademark protection for a bread or cake brand is a separate process through the Trademarks Registry.
Do I need to file anything with CAC in later years? Yes, registered businesses file annual returns. It is a small, separate step and we can help with it when the time comes.
How do I start? Send your business name to us on WhatsApp and we will take it from there. You can also use the registration link on this page.
Do you register bakeries outside Damaturu and Potiskum? Yes. We register bakery and confectionery businesses in all 17 LGAs of Yobe State, from Gashua and Nguru to Geidam and Gulani, at the same price and turnaround.
