Kannywood Has Its Own Regulator, and Registration Is Part of the Landscape
Kano gave its name to Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry, and film and video work in the state falls under the Kano State Film and Video Censorship Board. Over the years the Board has required practitioners to register individually and carry an ID before working in the state. In July 2023 it announced that existing practitioner licences were revoked so that everyone could renew and be properly documented, and its head said the exercise would also cover singers and other entertainers. For anyone starting a production company, studio or label in Kano, the practical point is that registration and licensing are part of working here. The Board’s licensing is separate from CAC registration and does not replace it. A CAC Business Name does a different job: it gives your production house or studio a legal identity that can sign contracts, issue invoices, hold a business account and be named on sponsorship and distribution agreements.

Outside the Scope of This Registration
CAC registration establishes your business. These media-specific approvals are separate, and none of them is part of the ₦35,500:
- Registration and licensing of practitioners and productions with the Kano State Film and Video Censorship Board
- Classification and clearance of films and videos with the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), where it applies to your distribution
- Broadcast licensing from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), if you plan to operate a radio or television station
- Copyright registration and music rights licensing through the Nigerian Copyright Commission and collective management bodies such as COSON
- Permits for shoots in public places and for live events or shows
- Customs and import clearance for cameras, audio equipment and other gear you bring in
- Physical/printed copies of your certificate (delivered as soft copy; you print locally whenever convenient)
- Business bank account opening, done with your chosen bank once your certificate is in hand
- Annual returns filing in future years, a small, separate step we can also help with when the time comes
Here’s Exactly What You’re Paying For

- Completion and submission of the CAC Business Name application
- CAC government filing/processing fee
- Your Certificate of Registration (soft copy)
- Tax Identification Number (TIN)

Business Name vs. Limited Liability Company for Media and Music
| Business Name | Limited Liability Company | |
|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive cost | ₦35,500 | ₦65,500 |
| Personal liability protection | No | Yes |
| Documents received | Certificate + Status Report + TIN | Certificate + Status Report + Memart + TIN |
| Best for | Solo producers, studios, photographers, DJs, independent artists | Labels with signed artists, production companies with partners, investor-backed ventures |
A Business Name suits an individual producer, a studio owner, a photographer or an independent artist. If you’re building a label with several signed artists, a production company with co-owners, or a venture that investors or large sponsors will back, the company structure is usually a better fit because it separates your personal assets from the business. You can start with a Business Name and convert later.

The Work Is Creative, but the Deal Sheet Isn’t
Late nights in the studio, a rough cut that finally works, a track that lands on the first full playback: that’s the part you got into this for. Then comes the other half. The sponsor wants an invoice from a registered company. The venue wants a contract signed by a named business. A distributor asks who the rights holder is, and a client wants to pay into an account that isn’t your personal one. None of this changes the quality of your work, but all of it decides whether bigger opportunities can actually reach you. A CAC certificate puts your production house, studio or label on the public register, which lets you answer those questions in a single document and get back to the work. It also gives your brand a formal footing as it grows from a one-person operation into a team with credits to its name.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does CAC registration cost for a media or music business in Kano State? ₦35,500 all-inclusive for a Business Name, the same across all 44 LGAs. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.
What do I get for the ₦35,500? Name search and reservation, the completed CAC filing, the government processing fee, your Certificate of Registration, a TIN, and a CAC Status Report confirming your business is active on the public register.
Is a Business Name enough for a studio or production house? For an individual owner or a small team, yes. A Business Name gives your venture a registered legal name and is the usual starting point. Industry licences are separate.
Does CAC registration give me a licence to make films in Kano? No. Film and video practitioners in Kano deal with the Kano State Film and Video Censorship Board, which handles its own registration and licensing. CAC registration makes the business itself legally recognised.
I’m a solo artist. Can I register under my stage name? Yes, if the name is available on the CAC register. You can propose your stage name as one of your two business names, and it’s wise to have a backup ready.
Can I register a studio, a label and a video production company under one name? Yes. A single registration covers your business as a whole, and you can describe your nature of business broadly enough to include more than one line of work.
Should I register a Business Name or a Limited Liability Company? A Business Name suits solo producers, studios, photographers and independent artists. If you’re building a label, bringing in co-owners or expecting investors, the company route is worth considering.
When should I upgrade to a Limited Liability Company? Typically when you sign artists under a label, take on partners or investors, or a major sponsor, distributor or lender asks for a company.
Does CAC registration protect my songs or films? No. CAC registration covers your business name on the register, not your creative works. Copyright for songs, films and recordings is handled through the Nigerian Copyright Commission, and brand-name protection beyond the register is a separate trademark matter.
Do I need a broadcast licence for a podcast or online radio show? A licence to operate a radio or television station is issued by the National Broadcasting Commission and is separate from CAC. If you’re running a broadcast station, check with NBC. For other online content, confirm what applies to your format.
Will sponsors, event organisers and brands ask for my registration? Many do. Brands and organisers commonly prefer to contract with a registered business, so a CAC certificate is often one of the first documents requested.
Can I open a business account to receive payments and royalties? Yes. A CAC certificate is one of the main documents banks ask for when opening a business account, along with your ID and other details.
I work from a home studio. Can I still register? Yes. You need a business address in Kano State with its LGA, and that can be your home, studio or office.
Do I need equipment before I register? No. You need a business address and a nature of business description, but your gear doesn’t have to be in place first.
What is the TIN included in the price? It’s your Tax Identification Number, issued for your business as part of the registration. It’s used in your dealings with tax authorities and is often requested when you invoice larger clients.
Will I get a printed certificate? Your certificate arrives as a soft copy on WhatsApp, and you print it locally whenever you need a hard copy.
Do you register businesses outside Kano city? Yes. We register media and music businesses in all 44 Kano LGAs at the same price and turnaround.
What if my preferred name isn’t available? Send a backup name and we’ll check it straight away. Having two or three ready keeps things moving.
Can I convert my Business Name to a Limited Liability Company later? Yes. Many creative businesses start with a Business Name and convert as they grow, and we can assist with that conversion.
Do I have to file annual returns? Yes. Annual returns are a continuing CAC obligation in later years. They’re not part of this registration, but we can help with them when the time comes.
