Why Kano’s Phone and Payments Traders Are Registering Now
Kano is home to the Farm Centre GSM Market in Tarauni LGA, one of the largest technology-focused markets in northern Nigeria. It has more than 20 plazas, thousands of young traders, and buyers who come from across the region and from neighbouring Niger Republic for phones, accessories and computer parts. The state government has announced a redevelopment plan for it worth over ₦2 billion, with a dedicated management structure to follow. That is a lot of phone, airtime and payments activity concentrated in one city, and the regulators have noticed the payments side of it. In a December 2025 notice, the Corporate Affairs Commission said that from 1 January 2026 no POS operator would be allowed to operate without CAC registration, and that terminals belonging to unregistered operators could be seized. Earlier in 2025, the Central Bank of Nigeria had also directed that POS terminals operate within a 10-metre radius of their registered address. For a Kano agent, the business address on your registration now matters as much as the name on it.

- Mobile money and fintech agents: operators working under a fintech or super-agent platform who need a registered business behind their account.
- Airtime and data resellers: vendors selling recharge cards, e-top-up and data bundles.
- Phone and accessories retailers: shops and plaza traders selling handsets, chargers, earphones and covers.
- Phone repair and servicing workshops: screen replacement, software repair and unlocking businesses.
- GSM wholesale and distribution: businesses supplying phones and accessories to other retailers.
- Bill payment and token vending points: outlets handling electricity, cable TV and utility payments.
What You’ll Need to Arrange Separately
CAC registration makes your business legally recognised. These telecom and payments approvals sit outside the ₦35,500 and are handled with the relevant body:
- Your agent onboarding with a fintech, bank or super-agent platform, and compliance with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s agent banking rules
- A Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) licence, if you plan to operate as a telecom service provider rather than a phone or airtime retailer
- NCC type-approval requirements for any telecom devices you import or distribute
- Dealer or agent arrangements with mobile network operators, if you sell SIM cards or airtime wholesale
- Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) requirements for imported electronics and accessories
- Customer data handling obligations under Nigeria’s data protection law, if you store customer details
- Fire-safety and shop-premises arrangements for your plaza or market location
- Physical/printed copies of your certificate (delivered as soft copy; you print locally whenever convenient)
- Business bank account opening, done with your chosen bank once your certificate is in hand
- Annual returns filing in future years, a small, separate step we can also help with when the time comes
Everything Covered in Your ₦35,500
Your Business Name registration for a POS, telecom or phone business in Kano State is ₦35,500, with the CAC government fee and our service fee included in that single price.
- Business name availability search
- Business name reservation
- Completion and submission of the CAC Business Name application
- CAC government filing/processing fee
- Your Certificate of Registration (soft copy)
- Tax Identification Number (TIN)
- A CAC Status Report confirming your business is active on the public register
Prefer a company structure? A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive and adds your Memorandum and Articles of Association (Memart) and personal liability protection.
Business Name vs. Limited Liability Company for Telecom and POS
| Business Name | Limited Liability Company | |
|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive cost | ₦35,500 | ₦65,500 |
| Personal liability protection | No | Yes |
| Documents received | Certificate + Status Report + TIN | Certificate + Status Report + Memart + TIN |
| Best for | Single-outlet POS agents, phone shops, airtime vendors, repair workshops | Multi-terminal agent networks, GSM wholesalers, importers, partner-owned ventures |
Most individual POS agents and phone retailers do well with a Business Name. If you operate several terminals or outlets, import stock in volume, supply other retailers, or run the business with partners, the company structure usually fits better because it separates your personal assets from the business. You can begin with a Business Name and convert later.

Float Runs Low at 4 p.m., and Customers Still Expect You to Be There
Anyone who has run a terminal knows the rhythm. The morning rush for withdrawals, the afternoon scramble to top up your float, the customer who needs a transfer to go through right now, and the one who only trusts the agent they’ve used for years. You’ve built that trust one transaction at a time, and no certificate can do that for you. What a certificate can do is keep the business standing when someone asks for proof. It supports your agent account with the platform you work under, it backs up your terminal if officials ask who it belongs to, and it lets you open a business account for your float instead of mixing it with personal money. For a phone shop or airtime outlet, it does the same job with suppliers who want to deal with a registered name. It’s a single document, and it saves you a lot of awkward questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does CAC registration cost for a POS or telecom business in Kano State? ₦35,500 all-inclusive for a Business Name, the same across all 44 LGAs. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.
What do I get for the ₦35,500? Name search and reservation, the completed CAC filing, the government processing fee, your Certificate of Registration, a TIN, and a CAC Status Report confirming your business is active on the public register.
Is a Business Name enough to run a POS business? For most individual agents and small outlets, yes. A Business Name gives you the registered business that CAC has said POS operators need. Agent onboarding with your fintech or bank is a separate step.
Does CAC registration make me a licensed agent? No. CAC registration makes your business legally recognised. Becoming an agent still happens through your fintech, bank or super-agent platform under Central Bank of Nigeria rules.
Is CAC registration really required for POS operators now? CAC announced in December 2025 that from 1 January 2026 no POS operator should operate without registration, and warned that unregistered terminals could be seized. The exact scope and enforcement can change, so it’s best to be registered rather than hope to be missed.
I already have a registration for another business. Does it cover POS? A registration is tied to a business name and its stated activities. If yours doesn’t mention POS or agent banking, send us the details and we’ll advise on the cleanest way forward.
Can I combine POS, airtime and phone sales under one name? Yes. You can describe your nature of business broadly enough to include POS services, airtime and data sales, and phone retail.
Which address should I register if I work from a kiosk or plaza unit? Use the address where you actually operate. The Central Bank of Nigeria has directed that POS terminals be used close to their registered address, so the two should match.
Should I choose a Business Name or a Limited Liability Company? A Business Name suits single-outlet operators. If you run multiple terminals or shops, import in volume, or have partners, the company route is worth considering.
When should I upgrade to a Limited Liability Company? Usually when you add outlets, take on partners or investors, start supplying other retailers at scale, or a platform or lender asks for it.
Do I need an NCC licence to sell phones, SIMs or airtime? Selling handsets and recharge as a retailer is different from operating as a telecom service provider. NCC licensing applies to the latter, and SIM or airtime supply usually runs through arrangements with the mobile networks. All of this is separate from CAC registration.
Can I register if I trade from a plaza stall or market shop? Yes. You just need a business address in Kano State, which can be your shop, stall or kiosk location.
Can I open a business bank account with the certificate? Yes. A CAC certificate is one of the main documents banks ask for when opening a business account, along with your ID and other details.
Will I receive a printed certificate? Your certificate arrives as a soft copy on WhatsApp, and you print it locally whenever you need a hard copy.
Do you register businesses outside Kano city? Yes. We register telecom and payments businesses in all 44 Kano LGAs at the same price and turnaround.
What if my preferred name isn’t available? Send a backup name and we’ll check it straight away. Having two or three ready keeps things moving.
Can I convert my Business Name to a Limited Liability Company later? Yes. Many operators start with a Business Name and convert as they grow, and we can assist with that conversion.
Do I have to file annual returns? Yes. Annual returns are a continuing CAC obligation in later years. They’re not part of this registration, but we can help with them when the time comes.
