If you install, sell or repair under your own name, a Business Name gives you what you need: a legal name for quotations, receipts, supplier accounts and the bank. A company starts to make more sense once you are carrying significant stock, bidding on larger system installations, sharing ownership, or bringing in investors, because the business then stands apart from your personal assets. Many solar and power businesses start small and convert as they grow.

Electricity in Plateau Is Now a State-Regulated Market

Power regulation in Plateau State has changed in the last couple of years. Under the Electricity Act 2023, states can regulate electricity activities within their own territory, and in 2025 the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) issued an order transferring oversight of Plateau’s electricity market to the Plateau State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC). The order also directed Jos Electricity Distribution to set up a subsidiary to take over supply and distribution inside the state, and that subsidiary has to obtain its licence from PSERC.

Solar is part of the state’s plans as well. In July 2026, the governor and the Rural Electrification Agency flagged off construction of a 1.5-megawatt hybrid solar mini-grid in Pankshin LGA, with around ten more interconnected mini-grids planned for other parts of Plateau. At federal level, NERC has also issued Mini-Grid Regulations for 2026, which recognise the role of state regulators.

A CAC certificate does not replace any of these licences or give you a place in these projects. What it gives you is a legal business name and identity, which is typically the first thing asked for before you deal with the regulator, a client or a funder. Whether a licence applies to you depends on the size and nature of what you do, so confirm the current position with PSERC before you apply or expand.

You Size the System, We Handle the Filing

Your work runs on site surveys, load calculations, rooftop measurements and late calls about an inverter that tripped at night. You know how many panels a shop needs, which battery will last, and what a generator costs to keep running. The registration form is the one job that never fits between a delivery and a commissioning. Giving it to us means your business appears under a recognised name on quotations, invoices and supplier accounts while you keep doing the work clients are paying you for.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does CAC registration cost for a solar or power business in Plateau State? A Business Name is ₦35,500 all-inclusive, the same in every LGA. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.

What does the ₦35,500 cover? The name search and reservation, the completed CAC application, CAC’s filing fee, a soft-copy Certificate of Registration, a TIN and a CAC Status Report.

How long does it take, and how do I receive the documents? Usually 5–7 working days. Everything is sent to you as a soft copy on WhatsApp, and you print it locally.

Is a Business Name enough for a solar installation business? For a sole installer or small team, generally yes. It gives you the registered name to quote, invoice and bank under.

Can I register if I only sell panels, inverters or batteries? Yes. Sellers, installers and businesses that do both register the same way.

I repair inverters and generators. Can I register? Yes. Repair technicians and workshops can register a Business Name like any other business.

Can solar, generators and electrical contracting sit under one name? Yes. Describe the business broadly in the nature-of-business field, and one name can cover all of them.

Does CAC registration give me an electricity licence? No. It gives you a legal business name. Any licence from the electricity regulator is a separate matter.

Who regulates electricity in Plateau State? NERC issued an order transferring oversight of the state’s electricity market to the Plateau State Electricity Regulatory Commission. Confirm the current rules and contacts with that body.

Do I need a licence to install solar systems for customers? It depends on the scale and nature of your activity. Regulator licences typically concern generation, mini-grid and distribution work, so check with the regulator what applies to your services.

What about running a mini-grid? Mini-grids are regulated separately, and NERC has issued Mini-Grid Regulations for 2026 that recognise state regulators. That is a licensing question outside CAC registration.

Do I need COREN registration? It may apply where engineering services are involved, or where clients ask for it. Check the current requirements for your type of work.

Do I need SON approval or customs paperwork for imported equipment? Importing panels, inverters and batteries involves customs documentation and duties, and product-standard rules may apply. These sit outside CAC registration.

Will registering get me into the Pankshin mini-grid or other energy programmes? No. Those programmes are run by government agencies and their partners, and CAC registration does not give you a place in them. It gives you the registered name any application would start from.

Will the certificate help with bulk or institutional orders? Churches, schools, clinics, companies and NGOs often ask for proof of registration before hiring an installer or supplier, so it is a useful document to hold. It does not guarantee any job.

Do you register businesses outside Jos? Yes, across all of Plateau State, from Wase and Dengi to Shendam and Langtang, at the same price and turnaround.

Can one registration cover both my shop and my workshop? One registration covers your business as a whole. Local permits generally attach to each premises, so check them for every location.

Can I open a business bank account with the certificate? Yes. It is one of the main documents banks ask for, along with your ID and other details.

Is the TIN included? Yes, a Tax Identification Number is part of what you receive for the ₦35,500.

Do I have to file anything with CAC later? Registered businesses file annual returns. It’s a small, separate step and we can help when it falls due.

What if my first-choice name is already taken? Send us another and we’ll check it straight away. Having two or three options ready keeps things moving.

Can I upgrade to a Limited Liability Company later, and when does it make sense? Yes, and we can assist with the conversion. A company is worth considering once you hold significant stock, take on larger system installations, bring in partners, or an investor requires that structure.
