A Business Name is usually enough while you run the workshop yourself and need a legal name for invoices, supplier accounts and a bank account. A Limited Liability Company is worth considering when the business grows into a large workshop, shares ownership with partners, or takes on contracts with companies and fleets that prefer to deal with another company. Your Garage Also Needs a State Premises Permit

Ogun State runs a Business Premises Permit (BPP) that is separate from CAC registration. According to the state’s permit portal, it is a mandatory annual permit for businesses operating from premises in the state, set out in the Second Schedule of the Ogun State Business Premises Registration Law as amended in 2006. The portal says it applies to all businesses in the state except lock-up shops and kiosks. The agency in charge is the Ogun State Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment. The permit is renewed every year online through the state’s business permit portal. The portal’s own FAQ also says that a business not yet registered with CAC still needs the permit, and that the owner of an informal business can apply online using a proposed business name.

For a mechanic, this means two different pieces of paperwork. CAC registration gives your business its legal name, and the premises permit covers the place where you work. A workshop that appears under one consistent registered name on both is easier to deal with when a customer, a bank or an officer asks. Whether the permit applies to your particular set-up, and what you will pay, is for the state to say, so check the portal or the ministry. Nothing here is a guarantee of any approval, and CAC registration does not replace the permit.
