CAC Business Name Registration for Bookshop in Lagos State

Books and stationery sell all year in Lagos, and they sell hardest when a new school term starts, exams approach or an office needs its supplies restocked. If you run a bookshop, a stationery store, a photocopy and print centre or an online book business, a registered name gives the business an identity that suppliers, schools and banks can recognise. Onelove Business Ventures is an accredited CAC agent. We run the name search, complete the filing and send you the certificate, wherever your outlet is in Lagos State. Registration costs ₦35,500, all-inclusive, with CAC’s fee and ours already counted in, and the certificate typically comes through in 5–7 working days.

There’s no extra step hiding behind this: message us your business name, and we take it from there.

Lagos Is Where Nigeria’s Book Calendar Gathers

Few Nigerian cities hold as many reading events as Lagos. The Lagos Book and Art Festival (LABAF), organised by the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA) and running since 1999, held its 27th edition from 10 to 16 November 2025 at Freedom Park on Lagos Island and the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History in Onikan. Its programme has long included book exhibitions and a Publishers’ Forum. Later this year, the Aké Arts & Book Festival is scheduled to return to Lagos for its 14th edition from 19 to 21 November 2026, under the Book Buzz Foundation. Confirm programme details with the organisers before planning around either event.

For a bookseller, events like these are chances to sell, meet publishers and build a customer list. They also mean dealing with organisers, authors and distributors who tend to work with named businesses. A registered business name gives you one to put on invoices, order forms and supplier accounts. It does not secure you a stall or any trade terms; those depend on the organisers and publishers themselves.

What’s Not Usually Included

What’s Included in the ₦35,500

Best forSingle bookshops, stationery stores, print centres and online sellersMulti-branch chains, publishers with co-owners or investors, and firms chasing large school or office supply deals

A Business Name fits the owner who runs one outlet or an online shop and needs a legal name for invoices, supplier accounts and a bank account. A Limited Liability Company starts to make sense when you open several branches, bring in partners or investors, or want the business to stand apart from your personal assets. Plenty of booksellers begin with a Business Name and upgrade later.

Shelves to Restock, Customers at the Counter

A bookshop’s year is lumpy. Term-start brings parents with printed lists and short patience, exam season brings a surge of past questions and stationery, and in between come reorders, damaged stock, supplier calls and a counter that cannot be left unattended. Print and copy centres run on a different clock, with queues, machine downtime and last-minute binding. In the middle of all that, registering a business name is a job that nobody has time to chase. Pass it to us. When the certificate arrives, your outlet has a recognised name to print on receipts, quotations and supplier forms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does CAC registration cost for a bookshop or stationery business in Lagos State? ₦35,500 all-inclusive for a Business Name, whatever part of Lagos you operate in. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.

What does the ₦35,500 cover? The name search and reservation, the CAC application and filing, the government fee, your Certificate of Registration (soft copy), a TIN and a CAC Status Report.

Is a Business Name enough for a bookshop or stationery store? For most owner-run shops, print centres and online sellers, yes. It gives you the legal name you need to trade, invoice and open a bank account.

I sell other people’s books. Do I need an ISBN? No. ISBNs are issued to the publisher of a title. They matter if you publish your own books, and you apply for them separately through the National Library of Nigeria.

I’m a self-published author. Can I register a publishing imprint? Yes. You can register a business name for your imprint and describe it as publishing and book sales. ISBNs for each title are a separate application.

Can a print and photocopy centre register under the same arrangement? Yes. Describe the business as printing, photocopying and office services. Copyright rules on reproducing protected works are handled separately.

Does the certificate let me supply textbooks to schools? No. Schools decide whom they buy from and which titles they approve. A certificate gives you a registered name to put on quotations and invoices.

Can I register an online bookstore that operates from social media? Yes. You still need a Lagos address with its LGA for the application, such as your home or office address.

I import stationery and equipment. Does CAC registration cover that? The registration gives you a business name and TIN. Customs clearance and any product requirements for imports are separate.

I sell books, gifts and snacks together. How do I describe the business? Keep the description broad, for example “sale of books, stationery and gift items.”

Can I register if I only sell at book fairs and events? Yes. You need an address for the application, and a registered name helps when dealing with suppliers and organisers.

Does it matter which part of Lagos I trade in? No. The price, requirements and turnaround are the same from Badagry to Epe and from Ikorodu to Apapa.

I haven’t leased a shop yet. Can I still apply? You need a Lagos address and its LGA for the application. If you are still looking for premises, send the address you plan to use.

Can I run several branches under one business name? One registration covers the business as a whole. Shop permits and local levies usually attach to each outlet, so check requirements for every location.

Will schools and offices ask for my CAC certificate? Institutions often ask for proof of registration before placing regular or bulk orders, so it is a useful document to hold. It does not guarantee any order.

Is the TIN included? Yes. A Tax Identification Number comes with the ₦35,500.

Can I open a business bank account with the certificate? Yes. A CAC certificate is one of the main documents banks ask for, along with your ID and other details.

What happens if my first-choice name is taken? Send a backup and we will check it right away. Having two or three options ready keeps things moving.

Can I move from a Business Name to a Limited Liability Company later? Yes. Many bookshops start with a Business Name and convert when they open more branches, bring in partners or pursue larger supply deals. We can assist with the conversion.

Do I have to file anything with CAC after registration? Registered businesses file annual returns. It is a small, separate step, and we can handle it for you when it is due.
