CAC Business Name Registration for General Trading in Oyo State

General trading is the business of whatever the market needs this week: provisions on Monday, a bulk order of household goods on Thursday, a new product line the following month. A registered business name gives that flexibility a proper footing, so suppliers, customers and banks can see who is behind the stock. Onelove Business Ventures is an accredited CAC agent. We handle the name search, the filing and the certificate for traders, retailers and wholesalers anywhere in Oyo State, whether your shop is in Ibadan, your depot is in Ogbomosho or your stall is in Saki. A Business Name costs ₦35,500 all-inclusive, and a Limited Liability Company costs ₦65,500 all-inclusive. Getting started is as light as it sounds: your business name on WhatsApp is the only thing we need from you to begin.

What’s Included in the ₦35,500

The ₦35,500 is a single payment that includes CAC’s own filing fee and our service fee. No extra charges follow. If you want to register as a company instead, the Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500, also all-inclusive.

What’s Not Usually Included

Buying and selling many kinds of goods can bring in approvals that CAC does not cover. Which ones apply depends on what you stock:

Business Name vs. Limited Liability Company

Best forOwner-run shops, market traders and small wholesalersLarger wholesalers and distributors with partners, big credit lines or outside investors

For a shop or stall that you run yourself, a Business Name is usually the right place to start. A company structure begins to make sense once your stock and credit exposure are large, when partners share ownership, or when an investor or a major supplier prefers dealing with a company, because the business then stands apart from your personal assets. Many traders register a Business Name first and upgrade as turnover grows.

Oyo Is Bringing Traders Into the Tax Net

Oyo’s trading economy has been drawing more attention from the state’s revenue authorities. A new state tax law signed by Governor Seyi Makinde on 28 December 2023 was followed by sensitisation sessions in early 2024 for traders and artisans. Officials said informal operators who keep no sales records, such as tailors and vulcanisers, fall under a presumptive tax framework, and that traders and artisans were being registered so the state could track them. The charges for this group were described as being as low as ₦1,000 to ₦5,000 a year, and officials suggested that registered traders could find it easier to access grants and loans. Separately, the head of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Service has said that government bodies should not accept trade or professional licences unless the holder has a valid tax clearance certificate.

For a trader, the practical message is that being properly identified as a business matters more than it used to. CAC registration does not replace any state tax registration or tax clearance. It gives you a registered business name and a Tax Identification Number, which the ₦35,500 covers, to deal with those requirements under. Tax matters themselves are for the Oyo State Internal Revenue Service and your own tax advice.

Stock Moves Faster Than Paperwork

You already know which goods sell on which days, how much credit a regular customer can carry before it hurts, and how quickly a supplier’s price list can change. Your day is made of counting stock, negotiating prices, loading and offloading and keeping an eye on a till that never seems to stay balanced. Registering the business name is a job on that list that someone else can complete for you from start to finish. When it is done, your business has a registered name to put on invoices, supplier accounts and bank forms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does CAC registration cost for a general trading business in Oyo State? A Business Name is ₦35,500 all-inclusive, whichever Oyo town your shop is in. Registering as a Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.

What does the ₦35,500 include? The name check and reservation, the filing itself, CAC’s fee, a digital Certificate of Registration, a TIN and a CAC Status Report.

Is a Business Name enough for a provision shop or general store? For most owner-run shops it is the normal starting point, since it gives the business a legal name. Permits tied to specific goods are separate matters.

What does “general trading” cover on the registration? It lets you describe the business broadly, such as general trading, wholesale supply or provisions and household goods. Describe the lines you actually sell, and confirm any approvals for regulated items.

Can I register as a wholesaler and a retailer at the same time? Yes. Write the nature of business so that it covers both activities.

What address do I use if I trade from a market stall? Use the address of your stall or shop, with the LGA included. If your premises are not final yet, send the address you plan to use.

I sell only on WhatsApp and Instagram. Can I register? Yes. You will still need an Oyo State address with the LGA, which can be your home if that is where you operate.

Does registering with CAC cover NAFDAC or SON requirements? No. Those agencies issue their own approvals, and which ones apply depends on the goods you handle.

Will the certificate help me become a distributor for a manufacturer? Producers and larger suppliers often ask for proof of registration before supplying a distributor on regular terms, so it is a useful document to have. It does not guarantee any appointment.

Does registering put me into the tax net? Registration gives you a legal business name and a TIN. What tax you owe depends on your business and turnover, and we are not tax advisers, so confirm your position with the Oyo State Internal Revenue Service or a qualified adviser.

I’ve heard Oyo is registering traders for tax. Does CAC registration replace that? No. State tax registration and tax clearance are separate and handled with the state’s revenue service. The CAC certificate and TIN give you a registered identity to deal with it under.

I import goods for resale. Does CAC registration cover that? It gives you the registered name that customs and suppliers will ask about, but import permits, clearance and duties are handled separately.

Can one registration cover several shops or stalls? One registration covers the business as a whole, and you can describe it broadly. Market fees and premises approvals usually apply to each location, so check what each site needs.

Can I run two different businesses under one registration? A second, separate business generally needs its own name and registration. If the two are really one trading business, a broad description of the nature of business may cover both.

Is the certificate enough to start a business bank account? It is the main document banks ask for, along with your ID and a few other items, so it usually puts you in a good position to apply.

Do I pay extra for the TIN? No. The Tax Identification Number is already part of the ₦35,500.

What if the name I want is already registered? We tell you quickly and check your next choice, so bring a few options.

Is there anything to file with CAC after the first year? Yes, yearly returns fall due. They sit outside this registration, and we can take them on when the date comes round.

Can I switch from a Business Name to a Limited Liability Company later? Yes. Many traders begin with a Business Name and convert once turnover, partners or investors justify it. We can help with the switch.

When does a trading business need a Limited Liability Company? When you carry large stock or credit, share ownership with partners, or deal with an investor or supplier who wants a company. The structure separates the business from your personal assets, but it does not remove your duties under tax, product or safety rules.

Do wholesalers pay more than small shops? No. The Business Name registration is ₦35,500 for everyone, all-inclusive, whatever the size of your stock.

Do you register traders outside Ibadan? Yes. We register trading businesses across Oyo State, from Ogbomosho and Oyo town to Saki and Iseyin, at the same price and turnaround.

Have a business name in mind? Message us on WhatsApp and we’ll run the search.
