General trading is the business of having what people need when they come looking: sacks and cartons stacked to the roof, a stock book that matches the shelves, credit customers who pay at the end of the week, and a supplier’s truck that always seems to arrive at the busiest hour. If you buy and sell for a living in Sokoto State, a registered business name puts a legal identity behind all of it. We’re Onelove Business Ventures, an accredited CAC agent, and we take care of the name check, the filing and the certificate for traders, wholesalers and merchants in every part of the state.

The Full Breakdown of Your ₦35,500
Your ₦35,500 is one all-inclusive payment. CAC’s government fee and our service fee are both counted in it, so there’s no add-on after you’ve paid. A Limited Liability Company, if you’d rather start that way, is ₦65,500, also all-inclusive.
- A search of CAC’s register for your two proposed names
- Reserving the name that’s available
- Completing and submitting your Business Name application
- CAC’s government processing fee
- Your Certificate of Registration, delivered as a soft copy
- A Tax Identification Number (TIN)
- A CAC Status Report confirming the business is active on the public register
Separate From This Registration
- Paper copies of the certificate. It arrives digitally, and any printing is up to you.
- Customs duties, import documentation and clearance if you bring goods in from abroad or across the Niger border.
- Compliance with Nigeria’s import and export prohibition lists. The revised import list dated April 1, 2026 was reported to include items such as frozen poultry, pork, beef and bagged cement, so confirm what you may trade before you order.
- Product registration with agencies such as the Standards Organisation of Nigeria or NAFDAC, where the goods you sell or import call for it.
- Market-association dues, shop or stall permits and fire-safety rules where you trade.
- Supplier or vendor listing with any office, school, company or government body you hope to supply, each of which has its own process.
- Tax obligations tied to your type of trading, beyond the TIN included here.
- A business bank account, which you open directly with your preferred bank once the certificate is issued.
- CAC annual returns in later years, a short and separate filing we can handle for you.
Business Name vs. Limited Liability Company
| Business Name | Limited Liability Company | |
|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive cost | ₦35,500 | ₦65,500 |
| Personal liability protection | No | Yes |
| Documents received | Certificate + Status Report + TIN | Certificate + Status Report + Memart + TIN |
| Best for | A single shop, stall or distribution point with one owner | Importers, large wholesalers, businesses supplying institutions, and those with partners |
A Business Name suits a single shop, stall or small distribution point: it gives you a legal trading name for receipts, supplier accounts and a bank account. A Limited Liability Company is worth considering once you import, hold large stock on credit, supply bigger buyers, or share ownership, because the business is then legally separate from you personally. Starting with a Business Name and upgrading later is a common path.
What to Have on Hand
- Two business names, with your favourite first
- An ID — NIN, international passport or driver’s license
- One passport photograph
- The address of your shop, store or stall in Sokoto State, with its LGA
- A phone number and an email address
- A short description of your trade, such as “general trading and wholesale of household goods” or “import and sale of assorted merchandise”
- If you choose a Limited Liability Company: IDs and details of the directors and shareholders
How We Get You Registered
- We check your names on CAC’s public search portal.
- We reserve the name that’s available.
- We complete the application with your business and address details.
- You send your ID and passport photograph; a clear phone photo is fine.
- You pay ₦35,500 once, covering everything above.
- We deliver your Certificate of Registration, TIN and Status Report on WhatsApp, usually within 5–7 working days.
From your side, that’s the entire process: one message, one payment, one certificate.
Illela, the Border and the Business of Moving Goods
Sokoto’s trading identity is tied to its border. In 2026 the Sokoto and Borno governors flagged off an upgrade of the Illela International Market in Illela LGA, a border community that shares a boundary with Niger Republic. The project covers the market’s grain, livestock and abattoir sections, and officials described it as a way to modernise the market and boost trade and commerce, including under the African Continental Free Trade Area. Illela’s border crossing was officially reopened by Nigeria Customs in March 2024 after ECOWAS sanctions on Niger were lifted, and the Customs command in Sokoto has asked traders and border communities to follow stipulated regulations.
For a merchant, that means opportunity and obligation together. A registered business name gives your trading a legal identity for bank accounts, invoices and supplier relationships. It does not give you any customs clearance, import permit or exemption from the prohibition lists. Those remain separate and depend on what you trade and where it comes from or goes.
Registering Traders and Wholesalers Across Sokoto State
Illela and the border belt
Illela, Tangaza and Gudu sit along the boundary with Niger Republic. Traders here deal in everything from grain and livestock to assorted general goods, and registration is the same price and timeline as anywhere else in the state.
Sokoto city and its neighbours
Sokoto North, Sokoto South, Wamako and Kware cover the capital’s shops, wholesalers and distributors.
The rest of the state
Binji, Bodinga, Dange Shuni, Gada, Gandi, Goronyo, Gwadabawa, Isa, Kebbe, Rabah, Sabon Birni, Shagari, Silame, Tambuwal, Tureta, Wurno and Yabo.
If your shop, stall or warehouse is anywhere in Sokoto State, you can register on these terms.
Market Days, Supplier Trucks and Credit Books
Trading has a tempo that never quite settles: a stall to be opened before the market fills, a supplier’s truck to be counted in, prices that move between one delivery and the next, a notebook of customers who owe and a wholesale buyer waiting for a quote. Chasing CAC forms would cost you precious selling hours. This is one task you can pass on completely. When it’s finished, your receipts, supplier accounts and bank paperwork can all carry the same registered name.
A Good Match If…
Different business owners want different things from an agent — this is who we serve best:
- You’re offloading a supplier’s truck, noting credit sales or rushing to open your stall before the market gets busy — and chasing CAC paperwork would cost you your best selling hours.
- You’re growing from one stall or provision store towards wholesale supply, cross-border trade or orders from offices and institutions — and you want a registered name behind your orders.
- You prefer being told what you actually need — if the Business Name does the job today, we’ll leave the company route for when it’s worth it.
- You’d rather not chase anyone — one message starts it, and the price you’re quoted is the price you pay.
If any of that rings true, you’re likely a good match for how we work.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does CAC registration cost for a trading business in Sokoto State? A Business Name is ₦35,500, all-inclusive, in any Sokoto LGA. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500, also all-inclusive.
What’s included in the price? The name search and reservation, preparation and filing of your CAC application, the government fee, a soft-copy certificate, a TIN and a CAC Status Report.
How long does it take? Normally 5–7 working days after we receive your details and payment.
Is a Business Name enough for a provision store or general trading business? For one shop or stall with one owner, usually yes. If you import, hold large stock or supply institutions, the company route is worth a look, and we’ll tell you honestly which fits.
How should I describe a business that sells many different things? Broadly, for example “general trading and wholesale of household goods.” We’ll phrase it properly for CAC.
I trade from a market stall. Can I register? Yes. We need an address in Sokoto State with its LGA, and a stall or store location is fine.
Does registration allow me to import or export goods? It gives you a legal business identity, but import and export involve customs procedures, documentation and, for some goods, permits. Those are separate.
Are some goods banned from import? Yes. Nigeria maintains prohibition lists, and the revised import list dated April 1, 2026 was reported to include frozen poultry, pork, beef and bagged cement, among others. Check the current list and its scope before ordering.
Do I need SON or NAFDAC approval for what I sell? It depends on the products. Some goods, especially imported ones, may need product registration with agencies such as these. Registration with CAC is separate.
Can I trade across the Niger border once I’m registered? Registration gives you a legal name to trade under, but cross-border trade is governed by customs rules and border procedures. Confirm the requirements for your goods before moving them.
Can I supply offices, schools or government bodies? The certificate helps show you’re a registered business, but each buyer has its own vendor requirements, and registration doesn’t guarantee any contract.
Do I need a Limited Liability Company to be a wholesaler? Not automatically. Plenty of wholesalers start with a Business Name. A company structure makes more sense as stock values, credit exposure and contracts grow.
Does a Business Name protect my personal assets? No. Only a Limited Liability Company creates a legal separation between you and the business, so it deserves thought if you carry large stock or credit.
Will wholesalers or suppliers ask for my registration? Many suppliers and larger buyers prefer to deal with registered businesses, so having the certificate is useful. Each supplier sets its own terms.
Which address should I give: shop, warehouse or home? The address where the business mainly operates, with its LGA. Tell us about any others.
Can I run more than one shop under the same registration? Yes, the registration belongs to the business. Premises permits and dues can differ for each location.
Do you register businesses outside Sokoto city? Yes, in every Sokoto LGA, at the same price and speed.
I sell online only. Can I register? Yes, as long as you have a business address in Sokoto State and its LGA.
Can I open a business account with the certificate? Yes. Banks typically ask for it, along with your ID and their forms.
Is the TIN part of the price? Yes. It’s included in the ₦35,500.
Are there annual CAC filings? Yes, annual returns. They’re short and separate, and we can handle them for you.
What if my first-choice name is taken? Give us other options and we’ll check them quickly. Having alternatives ready speeds things up.
Can I upgrade to a Limited Liability Company later? Yes. Many traders convert as the business grows, and we can help with the change.
What if I add very different product lines later? A broad description at the start usually covers new lines. If the business changes substantially, we can advise whether the registration needs updating.
Can I register under a name that includes “General Trading”? Name availability depends on what CAC has on its register. Send us your preferred names and we’ll check them.
