Yobe’s Health Facility Regulator: What to Know Before You Open

Yobe State has its own regulator for health facilities: the Yobe State Healthcare and Health-related Facilities Inspection and Monitoring Agency, known as YOHFIMA. It was established by law in January 2023 and is responsible for the inspection, accreditation, registration, monitoring and regulation of public and private healthcare facilities in the state. The governor inaugurated it in Damaturu in May 2023, together with the state’s emergency medical ambulance service.

The agency has shown it is willing to act. In February 2024 it announced the closure of seven private health-related training institutions and clinics found operating illegally, and it urged every public and private facility in the state to register with it. For anyone planning a clinic, a maternity home or a nursing home, that makes the order of work straightforward: put the business under a registered name first, then take the facility itself through the agency’s registration and inspection. CAC registration does not replace that step, and requirements can change, so ask the agency for its current checklist before you commit to premises.

Can I run a pharmacy or laboratory inside my hospital under the same name? You can describe the nature of business broadly. A dispensary or laboratory on the premises has its own registration with the relevant council.

Can I register more than one branch under one business name? One registration covers your business as a whole. Facility approvals generally attach to each location, so check the requirements for every branch with the agency.

I haven’t finalised my premises. Can I still register? You need a business address in Yobe State and its LGA for the application. If you are still arranging a building, send the address you plan to use.
