Sokoto has been a capital for more than two centuries, and it still draws people for reasons that need a bed for the night: visitors to the Sultan’s Palace and the historic sites around it, relatives travelling in for ceremonies, lecturers and students at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, traders passing through and officials on short assignments. If you run a hotel, a guest house, a lodge or a furnished apartment that houses them, putting the business under a registered name is the first piece of paperwork that makes it official. Onelove Business Ventures is an accredited CAC agent, and we handle the name search, the filing and the certificate for you, whichever local government area of Sokoto State your property is in. It really is this simple: send us your business name on WhatsApp, and we’ll handle everything else.

What Your ₦35,500 Covers
Your ₦35,500 is one all-inclusive payment for a Sokoto State accommodation business. CAC’s government fee and our service fee both sit inside it, and nothing extra is added once you’ve paid. If you would rather start as a company, a Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500, also all-inclusive.
- Name availability search on CAC’s public register
- Reservation of your chosen business name
- Preparation and submission of your CAC Business Name application
- CAC’s government filing and processing fee
- Certificate of Registration (soft copy)
- Tax Identification Number (TIN)
- CAC Status Report showing your business is active on the register
What Falls Outside This Registration
A CAC certificate gives your business its legal name. Running accommodation also involves approvals and record-keeping duties, and these are handled separately:
- Printed copies of your certificate (delivered as a soft copy; print locally when it suits you)
- Any hotel or guest-house licence or registration required by the Sokoto State government for your premises, which you should confirm with the state ministry responsible for culture and tourism
- Registration with the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, which may apply to hospitality businesses
- Guest-identification and record-keeping arrangements for your front desk, including anything the state or security agencies currently require
- Building, occupancy and fire-safety approvals for your property
- Environmental, waste and sanitation requirements for the premises
- Approvals for any restaurant, event hall or other service you run on the same premises
- State and local levies and the federal and state tax obligations that apply to accommodation businesses
- Business bank account opening, done with your chosen bank once your certificate is in hand
- Annual returns in later years, a small separate step we can help with when it falls due
Business Name or Limited Liability Company?
| Business Name | Limited Liability Company | |
|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive cost | ₦35,500 | ₦65,500 |
| Personal asset protection | No | Yes |
| Documents received | Certificate + Status Report + TIN | Certificate + Status Report + Memart + TIN |
| Best for | Owner-run guest houses, lodges, hostels and small hotels | Larger hotels, hotels with event halls, partners or outside investors |
For an owner-run guest house, a lodge, a hostel or a small hotel, a Business Name usually does the job: it gives you a legal name for bookings, invoices and your bank account. A Limited Liability Company becomes the better choice when the property is larger, when several people share ownership or when an investor wants a company structure, because the business then stands apart from your personal assets. Many owners start with a Business Name and upgrade as the property grows.
Documents to Have Ready
- Two proposed business names, ranked by preference
- A valid ID — National ID (NIN), international passport or driver’s license
- A passport photograph
- Your business address in Sokoto State, with the LGA
- A phone number and an email address
- What the business does, in plain words, e.g. “hotel and guest house accommodation” or “serviced apartments and hostels”
- If you choose Limited Liability Company: the names, ID and details of directors and shareholders
The Registration Timeline
- Name check — we confirm on CAC’s public search portal that your name is available.
- Reservation — we reserve the name once it is confirmed.
- Application — we complete it with your business, owner and Sokoto State address details.
- ID and photo — you send your ID and passport photograph; a phone photo is fine.
- Payment — you make one payment of ₦35,500 covering everything above.
- Certificate — your Certificate of Registration, TIN and Status Report arrive, usually within 5–7 working days.
From your side, that’s the entire process: one message, one payment, one certificate.
Heritage Visitors, University Guests and the Question of Guest ID
Sokoto’s draw is its history. The city is the traditional seat of the Sokoto Caliphate and is regarded as the spiritual capital of Nigerian Muslims, with the Sultan at its head. Visitors come to the Sultan’s Palace, to the Hubbare, where Shehu Usman dan Fodio is buried near Shehu’s Mosque, and to the Waziri Junaidu History and Culture Museum, set up in 1973, and the Sokoto Museum. Shehu Kangiwa Square marks the site of the 1903 battle with British forces, and the Akalawa ruins of the old Gobir kingdom lie in Sabon Birni local government area. Usmanu Danfodiyo University adds its own steady flow of guests. All of that brings demand for rooms across the state, not only in the capital.
Guest records have been a theme here too. In August 2015 Sokoto’s then governor announced that guests would need a valid ID to lodge in any hotel in the state from the following year, with Nigerians presenting a driver’s licence, international passport or national ID card and foreigners a passport with a valid Nigerian visa. Whether and how that is enforced today is a question for the state and the security agencies, so check current practice before you open. A registered business name is the first thing most owners put in place, and it is the name that later licences, guest records and bank accounts are set up under.

Good Hospitality Is in the Welcome, Not the Paperwork
You already know what guests notice: a room that is cool and clean after a long journey, a front desk that is awake when a late bus arrives, a bed turned over before the next check-in and a staff member who can answer a question about the way to the Sultan’s Palace or the museum. You already juggle linen, supplies, a family arriving for a ceremony and a lecturer who needs a quiet room for a week. Registering the business name is the one job on that list we can lift off you completely. When it is done, your property trades under a recognised name on receipts, guest records and bank paperwork, and not only on a signboard.
This Might Be a Great Fit If…
Different business owners want different things from an agent — this is who we serve best:
- You’d rather not wrestle with CAC’s portal between airport and motor-park pick-ups, guests arriving late from the road and the morning rush at the front desk — you want the paperwork finished while the property keeps running.
- You’re growing from a guest house toward a hotel with a restaurant and event hall, or a second property near the university or the city centre, and you want a registered name to grow under.
- You value a straight answer over a sales pitch — if a Business Name is enough for where you are, we’ll tell you that, not upsell you into the LLC.
- You want things kept simple — your details, one payment, your certificate.
If that sounds like how you like to do business, you’ll probably enjoy working with us.
Questions Sokoto Hotel and Guest House Owners Ask Us
How much does CAC registration cost for a hotel or guest house in Sokoto State? ₦35,500 all-inclusive for a Business Name, the same wherever in Sokoto State your property is. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.
What does the ₦35,500 cover? The name search and reservation, the completed CAC filing, CAC’s government fee, your Certificate of Registration (soft copy), a TIN and a CAC Status Report.
Is a Business Name enough for a guest house or small hotel? For most owner-run properties, yes. It gives you a legal name for bookings, invoices and your bank account. Licences and approvals for the property are separate matters.
How long does it take, and how do I get the certificate? Usually 5–7 working days. It arrives as a soft copy on WhatsApp, and you can print it locally.
What should I write as the nature of my business? Plain words work best, such as “hotel and guest house accommodation” or “serviced apartments and hostels”. We’ll help you word it when we prepare the application.
Can one registration cover a hotel, a restaurant and an event hall? Yes. Describe the nature of your business broadly, for example “hotel, restaurant and event hall services”. Each activity may need its own approvals.
Does CAC registration replace a hotel licence? No. CAC registration gives your business a legal name. Any licence or registration for your premises comes from the relevant government bodies.
Is there a hotel licence in Sokoto State? We could not point you to a single published rule here, so ask the state ministry responsible for culture and tourism what registration or licensing applies to hotels and guest houses before you open.
Do I need to register with the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation? It may apply to hospitality businesses, and it is handled separately from CAC. Check the current requirements for your type of property.
Do I have to ask guests for ID? In 2015 Sokoto’s then governor announced that guests would need valid ID to lodge in any hotel in the state from the following year. Check current practice with the state and the security agencies, and keep good guest records either way.
Can shortlets and serviced apartments register the same way? Yes. A furnished-apartment or short-let business can be registered the same way as a hotel.
Can a student or staff hostel register? Yes. Hostels renting rooms over longer periods can be registered the same way as a hotel or guest house.
Can I register lodging aimed at visitors to Sokoto’s heritage sites? Yes. It is registered the same way as any other accommodation business, wherever in Sokoto State it is.
Can I register more than one property under one name? One registration covers your business as a whole. Premises-level approvals can differ by property, so confirm what applies to each location you run.
I haven’t finalised my property yet. Can I still register? You need a business address in Sokoto State with its LGA for the application. If you are still arranging premises, send the address you plan to use.
Do you register businesses outside Sokoto city? Yes. We register accommodation businesses across all of Sokoto State, from Illela and Tangaza to Tambuwal and Wurno, at the same price and turnaround.
Can I open a business bank account with the certificate? Yes. A CAC certificate is one of the main documents banks ask for when opening a business account, along with your ID and other details.
Is the TIN included? Yes. A Tax Identification Number is part of what you receive for the ₦35,500.
Do I have to file anything with CAC in later years? Registered businesses have annual returns to file. It is a small, separate step and we can help when it falls due.
What if my first-choice name is already taken? Send a second name. That is why we ask for two, and we’ll check the backup right away.
When does a Limited Liability Company make more sense? Consider a company from day one if you are building a larger hotel, sharing ownership with partners or bringing in an investor.
Can I move from a Business Name to a company later? Yes. Many accommodation businesses begin with a Business Name and convert as the property grows, and we can assist with the conversion.
Will a certificate help with university, company or organisation bookings? Organisations often ask for proof of registration before arranging bulk or recurring bookings, so the certificate is a useful document to hold. It does not guarantee any booking.
Can I register a hotel and a restaurant or event hall under the same name? Yes, describe the nature of business broadly. A restaurant or event hall on your premises may need its own approvals.
Do I need CCTV or other security arrangements? Security arrangements are not part of CAC registration. Check with the state and the security agencies what they currently expect from accommodation businesses.
Are there taxes on accommodation businesses? State and local levies and federal tax obligations may apply to hotels and guest houses. These are separate from CAC, so ask the relevant revenue authorities what applies to you.
Does registration help me list on booking platforms? Platforms have their own requirements, and a registered name is often useful for listings, invoices and payouts. It does not guarantee approval on any platform.
In what order should I do things? Register the business name first, then apply for any state or federal approvals for your premises, which are usually made under the registered name.
