Lagos is where songs get recorded at midnight, adverts get shot before sunrise and videos go from the edit suite to a million phones in a week. If your work is music, film, photography or content, the business behind the creativity is easier to grow when it has a registered name that brands, venues, clients and banks can verify. Onelove Business Ventures is an accredited CAC agent. We handle the name search, the filing and the certificate for you, wherever your studio, label or production company is in Lagos State, so your time goes to the work itself. Share your business name over WhatsApp, and the rest of the process stays on our side.

Lagos, Film Boards and the Paperwork Behind the Screen
Lagos is the home of Nollywood and much of Nigeria’s music industry, and the state has its own regulator for what is shot and sold here: the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board. Reports say foreign productions filming in Lagos obtain permits from that board. In August 2020 the board issued a notice telling practitioners involved in producing, selling and distributing audio and visual products to register their content through its authorised agent, with a five per cent levy on each item sold in the state. Details like that can change, so check the board’s current position for your kind of content.
The federal level adds another layer. Under the National Film and Video Censors Board Act, a film or video work must be registered with the board before it is exhibited, and the Act sets out separate applications for video distribution companies, cinemas and similar corporate entities, accompanied by a certificate of incorporation. Individual Nigerian producers can register work, so a Business Name suits many independent creators, while distributors and cinema operators should look closely at the company route. Whichever applies, CAC registration is the starting point: register the business name first, then handle the board registrations and permits. We do the CAC step only.

Business Name or Limited Liability Company for a Music or Media Business
| Business Name | Limited Liability Company | |
|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive cost | ₦35,500 | ₦65,500 |
| Personal liability protection | No | Yes |
| Documents received | Certificate + Status Report + TIN | Certificate + Status Report + Memart + TIN |
| Best for | Independent artists, studios, DJs, videographers and solo creators | Labels, production houses, distributors, cinemas, and businesses with partners or investors |
For one artist, a one-room studio or a solo videographer, a Business Name is usually enough to take bookings, send invoices and open a bank account. A Limited Liability Company is worth weighing when you sign other artists, own expensive equipment, take on co-founders or investors, or distribute films and run cinemas, because the business then stands apart from your personal assets and sits better with corporate clients. Many creators start with a Business Name and convert later.
What’s Included in the ₦35,500
It is a single payment. CAC’s filing fee and our service fee are both included, so no extra charges appear afterwards. A Limited Liability Company, for creators who would rather start as a company, is ₦65,500, also all-inclusive.
- Business name availability search
- Business name reservation
- Completion and submission of the CAC Business Name application
- CAC government filing/processing fee
- Your Certificate of Registration (soft copy)
- Tax Identification Number (TIN)
- A CAC Status Report confirming your business is active on the public register
What’s Not Usually Included
- Printed copies of your certificate — we send a soft copy, and you print it locally

- Broadcast licensing, if you operate a radio or television station
- Copyright registration, music licensing and royalty arrangements, including dealings with music collecting societies
- Trademark registration for your label, studio or brand name, which is separate from a CAC business name
- Import documentation and customs steps for studio, camera, lighting or sound equipment
- Approvals and arrangements for your studio, venue or office premises
- Business premises registration with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) and any local government or LCDA levies
- Federal and state tax obligations, including VAT and PAYE where they apply
- Contracts with artists, crew and clients, which are best prepared with a lawyer
- Opening a business bank account, which you do with your bank once the certificate is ready

Requirements for CAC Registration in Lagos State
- Two business names you’d like, ranked by preference. A stage name or brand name can work if it’s available.
- A valid means of ID — National ID (NIN), international passport, or driver’s license
- A passport photograph
- The address of your studio, office or base in Lagos State, including the LGA. For a home-based or mobile business, use the address you work from.

- If you choose a Limited Liability Company: names, ID and details of each director and shareholder
Step-by-Step: How Little This Actually Takes
- Check name availability on CAC’s public search portal — handled on our side.
- Reserve the name once it’s confirmed available.

Your job ends after the details and the payment; the certificate then arrives without further chasing.

The Session Won’t Wait
Creative work runs on odd hours: a studio session that stretches past midnight, an edit due before a client’s launch, a shoot that depends on the light and a weekend of gigs after a week of rehearsals. In between, there are messages to answer, invoices to chase, social posts to schedule and equipment to keep powered when the lights go out. Paperwork is the one item with no creative payoff, which is why we take it off your hands. When it’s done, your work goes out under a registered name that appears on invoices, bookings, contracts and bank documents.
Who This Service Suits Best
Not every registration service is the right match for every business owner, and that’s fine — here’s who tends to get the most out of working with us:
- You’d rather be in the studio between sessions, behind the camera or in the edit suite while a deadline looms than working through CAC’s portal on your phone.
- You’re planning to grow beyond one person — from a solo artist or one-room studio to a label, a production house or a content agency working with brands, event organisers and broadcasters.
- You want honest advice, not an upsell — if a Business Name covers your stage, that’s what we’ll recommend.
- You want a process without back-and-forth — send your details once, pay once, and there are no surprise charges afterwards.
If that’s the kind of service you want, message us and we’ll begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to register a music or media business in Lagos State? ₦35,500, all-inclusive, for a Business Name, wherever in Lagos you work. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500, also all-inclusive.
What do I get for the ₦35,500? The name search and reservation, the completed CAC application, the government filing fee, your Certificate of Registration (soft copy), a TIN and a CAC Status Report.
Is a Business Name enough for an artist, studio or videographer? For most independent artists, one-room studios, DJs and solo videographers, yes. It gives you a legal name for bookings, invoices and your bank account.
Should an independent artist register a business? Many do. A registered name helps you take bookings, issue invoices to brands and venues, open a business account and separate your music income from personal accounts.
Can I register under my stage name or label name? Yes, if the name is available. We check it against CAC’s register. Send two or three options in order of preference.
Does CAC registration cover film and video registration? No. Film and video content may need registration, classification or permits from state and federal film boards. These are separate from CAC.
Do I need the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board for my content? Requirements depend on what you produce, sell or distribute. The board has issued notices on registering audio and visual content, so check its current position for your activity.
Is a Business Name enough for film distribution or running a cinema? The National Film and Video Censors Board Act asks for a certificate of incorporation in applications from distribution companies and cinemas. A Limited Liability Company is the safer starting point. Check the board’s current requirements.
Do I need a broadcast licence for a podcast or YouTube channel? Radio and television stations need licences from the broadcasting regulator. Online creators should check what applies to their kind of content. Neither is part of CAC registration.
Does CAC registration protect my music or brand? No. Copyright and trademark are separate processes. A business name registration doesn’t give you ownership of songs or exclusive rights to a brand name.
Will a CAC certificate get my music onto streaming platforms? No. Distributors and streaming services have their own onboarding. A certificate can help with business verification, but it doesn’t open any platform for you.
How should I describe the nature of business? Describe what you do in plain words, for example “music production and entertainment services” or “photography, videography and content creation.” A broad description lets you add services later.
Can I register a studio and a content agency under one name? Yes. Describe the business broadly. Separate approvals for particular activities, such as film distribution, still apply.
Do I need a studio before I register? No, but you need a Lagos State address and its LGA for the application. A home studio or the address you work from is fine.
Will brands and event organisers ask for my certificate? Many do, especially before signing contracts or paying invoices. The certificate is proof that your business exists. It doesn’t guarantee bookings or contracts.
Can I open a business bank account with the certificate? Yes. A CAC certificate is one of the main documents banks ask for when opening a business account, along with your ID and other details.
Is the TIN included? Yes. A Tax Identification Number is part of the ₦35,500.
Do I have to file anything with CAC in later years? Registered businesses have annual returns to file. It’s a small, separate step, and we can help when it’s due.
What if my first-choice name isn’t available? Send a backup name and we’ll check it straight away. Having two or three options ready keeps things moving.
Can I upgrade from a Business Name to a Limited Liability Company later? Yes. Many creators start with a Business Name and convert when they sign artists, take on partners or grow the team, and we can help with the conversion.
When does it make sense to start as a Limited Liability Company? If you’re launching a label, bringing in co-founders or investors, distributing films or working mainly with corporate clients who prefer contracting with a company, starting as an LLC is worth considering.
My partner and I run the business together. Which should we choose? Co-ownership is a point where a Limited Liability Company is often the cleaner structure. Tell us who the owners are and we’ll advise you plainly.
Can a band or group register together? Yes. A group can register under a shared name. Because several people then share ownership, a Limited Liability Company is often the cleaner structure, and we’ll tell you plainly which fits your group.
I’m a freelancer working alone. Do I still need to register? There’s no obligation from us, but clients, venues and banks often prefer to deal with a registered business. If a Business Name covers your stage, that’s what we’ll recommend.
Do you register businesses outside the main creative districts? Yes. We register music and media businesses across all of Lagos State, from Ikorodu and Epe to Badagry and Apapa, at the same price and turnaround.
