Cooking oil is a daily purchase in every Sokoto household, and the people who press, blend, bottle and sell it run some of the busiest small businesses in the state’s markets. In Sokoto that means groundnut oil first, with palm oil sold alongside it. If you trade or process either, putting the business under a registered name is a sensible first step. Onelove Business Ventures is an accredited CAC agent, and we handle the name search, the application and the certificate for oil businesses anywhere in Sokoto State.
Send your business name on WhatsApp and consider it handled — that’s genuinely the extent of what’s asked of you.

Groundnut Country: Sokoto’s Oil Crop and the Quality Question
Groundnut is the main local edible-oil crop of northern Nigeria, and research on the region’s groundnut trade lists Sokoto among the northern states where it is mainly grown. A BusinessDay report on US Department of Agriculture figures says groundnut supplies about 23 per cent of the vegetable oil produced in Nigeria, making it the second-largest contributor, and puts Sokoto at roughly 2 per cent of national groundnut output, so this is a modest producer and not the biggest one. The crop has had attention here: an ICRISAT technical report notes that extension agents from Sokoto’s agricultural development programme took part in demonstration work between 2015 and 2018 on improved varieties and ways of managing aflatoxin contamination. Palm oil, brought in from palm-growing parts of the country, is usually sold by the same traders.
A report on groundnut value chains in Mali, Niger and Nigeria says processing and marketing are the weak links, and that traders complain about oil quality, including adulteration with palm oil in some villages. In a trade where buyers are cautious, a seller who looks established and traceable has an advantage: a registered business name, a TIN, a bank account and a CAC Status Report that proves the business exists. Quality itself, and the NAFDAC registration of packaged oil, is a separate step that CAC registration does not replace. See the list below.

Separate From This Registration
CAC registration gives your business a legal name. The items below are handled by other bodies and depend on what you do:
- NAFDAC registration of packaged and processed edible oils, including labelling requirements
- Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) requirements where they apply to your product
- Approvals for your processing or storage premises, and local government stall, shop and market fees
- Quality, hygiene and storage arrangements, including keeping groundnuts and oil free from contamination such as aflatoxin
- Requirements for the containers, measures and labels you sell in
- Contracts with suppliers, farmers and buyers
- State and federal tax obligations beyond the TIN you receive
- Printed copies of your certificate, since it arrives as a soft copy for you to print locally
- A business bank account, opened with your chosen bank once the certificate is in hand
- Annual returns in later years, a small separate step we can help with when it falls due
What Your ₦35,500 Covers

Business Name or Limited Liability Company for an Oil Business?
| Business Name | Limited Liability Company | |
|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive cost | ₦35,500 | ₦65,500 |
| Protects personal assets | No | Yes |
| What you receive | Certificate + Status Report + TIN | Certificate + Status Report + Memart + TIN |
| Usually suits | Market sellers, small processors and owner-run oil shops | Bottlers and brand owners, distributors, and businesses with partners or investors |
A Business Name is usually enough for a market seller, a small processor or an owner-run oil shop that needs a registered name for receipts, supplier orders and a bank account. A Limited Liability Company is worth considering once you are bottling under your own brand, supplying distributors in volume, or sharing ownership with others. Beginning with a Business Name and upgrading later is a common route.

Early Market Mornings and Full Jerrycans
Your day begins early: stock unloaded before the market fills, jerrycans and bottles filled and sealed, customers asking whether the oil is pure, a wholesaler on the phone about prices, and the till to count at closing. Processors add pressing, filtering and clean-up to that, and the dry season’s heat makes careful storage a daily concern. With so much going on, learning a government portal can wait forever. Registration is one job we can take off your hands completely, and once it is done your business has a recognised name for receipts, supplier orders and its bank account.
This Might Be a Great Fit If…
Before you decide, here’s an honest look at who gets the most from our service:
- You’d rather not battle CAC’s portal between early market mornings, sealing jerrycans and bargaining with bulk buyers — you want the registration finished while the stock keeps moving.
- You’re planning past the market stall — from selling retail measures to supplying shops, restaurants and caterers, bottling and branding your own oil, or adding groundnut cake to your range.
- You prefer being told what you actually need — if the Business Name does the job today, we’ll leave the company route for when it’s worth it.
- You’d rather not chase anyone — one message starts it, and the price you’re quoted is the price you pay.
If that’s the kind of service you want, message us and we’ll begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does CAC registration cost for a palm oil or groundnut oil business in Sokoto State, and what do I get? ₦35,500 all-inclusive for a Business Name, whichever local government area you are in. That covers the name search and reservation, the completed CAC filing, the government fee, your Certificate of Registration (soft copy), a TIN and a CAC Status Report, usually in 5–7 working days. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.
Is a Business Name enough for an oil business, and when would I need a Limited Liability Company? For a market seller, small processor or owner-run oil shop, a Business Name usually is enough. A Limited Liability Company is worth considering when you bottle under your own brand, supply distributors in volume, share ownership or bring in investors, and we can upgrade you later if you start with a Business Name.
Can I register groundnut oil, palm oil and groundnut cake under one name, and does registration replace NAFDAC? Yes to the first: describe the nature of business broadly, for example “groundnut oil processing and palm oil trading”, and one registration can cover it. No to the second: NAFDAC registers packaged and processed oils separately, and CAC registration only gives your business a legal name.
Do you register businesses outside Sokoto city, and do I need a shop? We register oil businesses in every local government area of the state at the same price and turnaround. You do not need a shop: a market stall or a home address can work, as long as you give an address in Sokoto State with its LGA.
What can I do with the certificate afterwards? You can open a business bank account, since banks usually ask for a CAC certificate, and you can show it to wholesalers, shops and other buyers who prefer to deal with a registered business, though it guarantees no deal. Registered businesses also have annual returns to file, which is a small separate step that we can help with when it falls due.
