CAC Business Name Registration for Pharmacy in Sokoto State

Pharmacies, patent medicine shops and diagnostic laboratories are the first stop for many families in Sokoto when someone is unwell, and they work under more scrutiny than almost any other small business. Before the stock arrives, the shelves are fitted or the first sample is drawn, the business needs a legal name of its own. Onelove Business Ventures is an accredited CAC agent, and we handle the name search, the application and the certificate for pharmacy and laboratory businesses anywhere in Sokoto State.

Everything Covered in Your ₦35,500

One all-inclusive payment: CAC’s government fee and our service fee are both inside it, and nothing is added later. If you prefer to start as a company, a Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500, also all-inclusive.

What You’ll Need to Arrange Separately

CAC registration gives your business a legal name. It does not license a pharmacy or a laboratory. These items are handled by other bodies, and which ones apply depends on what you run:

Usually suitsSingle-owner medicine shops, small pharmacies and collection pointsWholesalers, laboratories with several owners, and businesses with outside investors

A Business Name is often enough for one owner starting a modest pharmacy, medicine shop or collection point. A Limited Liability Company deserves a look once you are wholesaling, running a laboratory with several owners, or bringing in investors. One caution: regulators sometimes set their own conditions on how a pharmacy or laboratory is owned and staffed, so confirm what PCN or MLSCN will accept before you settle on a structure. Tell us what they say and we will register the one that fits.

What You’ll Need

  1. Two proposed business names, ranked by preference
  2. A valid means of ID — National ID (NIN), international passport, or driver’s license
  3. A passport photograph
  4. Your business address in Sokoto State, including the LGA
  5. Phone number and email address
  6. Nature of business, in plain words, e.g. “pharmacy and medical supplies” or “medical laboratory and diagnostic services”
  7. If you choose Limited Liability Company: names, ID and details of the directors and shareholders

How the Process Runs

  1. We check your name’s availability on CAC’s public search portal.
  2. We reserve the name once it is confirmed free.
  3. We complete the application with your business, owner and Sokoto address details.
  4. You upload your ID and passport photograph; a phone photo works.
  5. You make one payment of ₦35,500, covering everything listed above.
  6. Your Certificate of Registration, TIN and Status Report arrive, usually in 5–7 working days.

From your side, that’s the entire process: one message, one payment, one certificate.

What a Week of PCN Enforcement in Sokoto Tells New Pharmacy Owners

A registered business name is the first layer of paperwork for a pharmacy, not the last. In 2021 the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria spent a week in Sokoto State on an enforcement exercise. According to The Sun, the team listed 536 premises, made up of 90 pharmacies and 446 patent medicine shops, and sealed 299 of them: 37 pharmacies and 262 patent medicine shops. The offences reported included not being registered with the council, failing to renew the premises licence, dispensing prescription-only medicines without a pharmacist’s supervision, and poor storage and sanitary conditions. The registrar said the aim was to make sure that every place selling medicines had met the conditions on location, storage, environment, documentation and personnel.

The lesson for anyone starting out is to do things in order. Register the business name first, so that you have a legal identity to apply under, then deal with PCN’s premises registration and renewal, and with MLSCN if you run a laboratory. PCN officials have said in other states that licensed premises must renew by 31 January each year, so check the current deadline with the council. A CAC certificate alone does not license any premises, and we would never suggest it does.

Expiry Dates, Cold Chains and Early-Morning Samples

A pharmacy or laboratory keeps a strict daily routine: shelves checked for expiry dates, prescriptions read twice, a fridge that must stay cold through a power cut, fasting patients arriving for samples first thing in the morning, results that clinics are waiting on. A mistake in any of those matters more than a mistake in most trades. That leaves very little room for decoding a government portal. Registering the business name is one job we can take off your hands completely, and once it is done your business has a legal name to print on receipts, result sheets, supplier orders and its bank account.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does CAC registration cost for a pharmacy or laboratory in Sokoto State? ₦35,500 all-inclusive for a Business Name, whichever local government area you are in. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.

What do I get for the ₦35,500? The name search and reservation, the completed CAC filing, the government fee, your Certificate of Registration (soft copy), a TIN and a CAC Status Report.

Is a Business Name enough for a pharmacy, medicine shop or laboratory? For a single-owner start-up, a Business Name gives you the registered identity you need. Wholesalers, multi-owner laboratories and businesses with outside investors often lean toward a Limited Liability Company. Licensing is a separate matter either way.

Does CAC registration let me open a pharmacy? No. It gives your business a legal name. Opening a pharmacy requires registration of the premises with the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria and a pharmacist to supervise it.

Will PCN accept a Business Name for my premises registration? We cannot speak for PCN, and its conditions can change. Ask the council which ownership structure it accepts, and if it prefers a company, we can register a Limited Liability Company for ₦65,500.

Do I need a pharmacist? Reporting on PCN’s enforcement shows that dispensing prescription medicines without a pharmacist’s supervision is treated as an offence. Staffing and licensing are matters for PCN, so check its current requirements.

What is different about a patent and proprietary medicine shop? These shops are licensed separately by PCN to sell approved over-the-counter medicines and household remedies, and not prescription-only ones. CAC registration is the same for both.

Does my laboratory need separate registration? Yes. Medical laboratories are regulated through the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, which is separate from CAC. Check its current requirements before you open.

What does NAFDAC do in all this? NAFDAC regulates the medicines and other products themselves, such as those you make, import or distribute. It is separate from CAC and from PCN, and you will want to buy only from licensed suppliers.

Can I register a pharmacy and a laboratory under one name? Yes. Describe the nature of business broadly, for example “pharmacy and diagnostic laboratory services”. Each activity will still need its own approvals.

Can a wholesale or distribution business register? Yes. A wholesale business is registered the same way and at the same price, and a Limited Liability Company is worth considering for it. Wholesale premises have their own PCN requirements.

I only want to run a sample-collection point. Can I register? Yes. A collection centre registers the same way. Check separately what the partner laboratory and the health authorities require of you.

Will the certificate help me supply clinics or hospitals? Clinics, hospitals and insurance schemes often ask for proof of registration before buying from a supplier, so the certificate is a useful document to hold. It does not guarantee any contract.

Can I register before my premises are ready? You need a business address in Sokoto State and its LGA for the application. If you are still arranging premises, send the address you plan to use.

Do you register businesses outside Sokoto city? Yes. We register pharmacy and laboratory businesses in every local government area of the state, at the same price and turnaround.

What if my first business name is taken? Send a backup name and we will check it straight away. Having two or three options ready keeps things moving.

Is the TIN included? Yes. A Tax Identification Number is part of what you receive for the ₦35,500.

What is the CAC Status Report for? It confirms that your business is active on CAC’s public register, and it is a handy document to show a supplier, bank or partner who asks for proof of registration.

Will I get a printed certificate? Your certificate arrives as a soft copy on WhatsApp, and you can print it locally whenever you need it.

How long does registration take? Usually 5–7 working days once your details and payment are in.

Can I open a business bank account with the certificate? Yes. A CAC certificate is one of the main documents banks ask for when opening a business account, along with your ID and other details.

Do I need to file anything with CAC in later years? Registered businesses have annual returns to file. It is a small, separate step, and we can help when it falls due. Your PCN or MLSCN renewals are separate.

Can I upgrade from a Business Name to a Limited Liability Company later, and when does it make sense? Yes, we can assist with the conversion. It is worth considering when you start wholesaling, when ownership is shared, when an investor wants a company structure, or when a regulator prefers one.
