Highland Tea, NAFDAC and the Case for Registering First
Taraba already has a beverage story to its name. On the Mambilla Plateau, in Kakara in Sardauna LGA, Mambila Beverages Nigeria Limited produces Highland Tea. The company grew out of the Nigeria Beverages Production Company, which began operating in 1982 and was later taken over by the Taraba State Government. A study of the plateau puts the number of small-scale tea farmers there at over 5,000. The federal Raw Materials Research and Development Council’s Taraba coordinator has said that less than 10% of Nigeria’s tea demand is met locally, which shows how much room there is for homegrown drinks.
Anyone who wants to sell a packaged drink beyond their own counter meets the same gatekeeper: NAFDAC. Packaged beverages, juices and water are regulated products, and NAFDAC’s registration process involves documents, laboratory analysis, label review and a facility inspection. Commercial guides on the process also say a business must be registered with CAC before it applies, and that a registered company is often preferred for product registration. A Business Name is a sound, low-cost starting point for a juice bar, depot or small-batch producer. If your plan is to bottle and sell your own branded product, ask NAFDAC what it requires and consider a Limited Liability Company from the start.

What Falls Outside This Registration
CAC registration gives your business a name and legal identity. These items belong to the beverage trade and are handled separately; they are not part of the ₦35,500:
- Printed copies of your certificate, since you receive a soft copy and print it locally
- NAFDAC registration of any packaged product you produce, import or sell under your own label, including its facility inspection, laboratory analysis and label approval
- Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) quality requirements, where they apply to your product
- Trademark registration for your brand name or logo, which is a separate process at the Trade Marks Registry and different from your CAC business name
- Taraba State and local government permits, levies and market or shop fees that apply to your premises
- Hygiene and health approvals for the place where you blend, bottle or serve
- State and federal tax obligations, including VAT where it applies
- Opening a business bank account, done with your chosen bank once the certificate is in hand
- Annual returns in later years, a small separate task we can also help with
What Your ₦35,500 Covers
The ₦35,500 is one all-inclusive payment for your Taraba State beverage business. CAC’s filing fee and our service fee are both inside it, and no extra charges follow. If you would prefer to start as a company, a Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500, also all-inclusive.
- A search confirming your chosen business name is available
- Reservation of the name once it clears
- Completion and submission of your CAC Business Name application
- The CAC government filing/processing fee
- Your Certificate of Registration (soft copy)
- Your Tax Identification Number (TIN)
- A CAC Status Report showing your business is active on the public register
Business Name vs. Limited Liability Company
| Business Name | Limited Liability Company | |
|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive cost | ₦35,500 | ₦65,500 |
| Personal liability protection | No | Yes |
| Documents received | Certificate + Status Report + TIN | Certificate + Status Report + Memart + TIN |
| Best for | Juice bars, drink depots, local drink sellers and small-batch producers | Producers planning NAFDAC-registered branded products, or with partners or investors |
If you sell juice or drinks from a shop, stall or small kitchen and need a legal name for receipts, supplier accounts and a bank account, a Business Name is usually enough. A Limited Liability Company becomes the better choice when you plan to produce and package a branded drink for wider sale, share ownership with partners or take in investors, because the business then stands apart from your personal assets. Many owners begin with a Business Name and upgrade later.

The Fruit Won’t Wait, and Neither Does the Paperwork
Oranges, pineapples, watermelons and ice all have a short shelf life, and a drinks business runs on getting them from the market to the glass while they are fresh. You are choosing fruit, washing and pressing, sweetening to taste, filling bottles, loading the cooler and chasing customers who want a cold drink before the afternoon heat. Not one of those jobs involves the CAC portal. Let us take that part, and your business will have a registered name to print on labels, invoices and the quotations you hand to shops and event organisers.
A Good Match If…
Before you decide, here’s an honest look at who gets the most from our service:
- You’d rather not wrestle with CAC’s portal while a batch is being blended, bottles are being filled or a delivery run is waiting — fruit and ice don’t hold still for paperwork.
- You’re aiming to move from your stall or shop to supplying supermarkets, schools, caterers or distributors, perhaps under your own packaged brand — and you want a registered name in place before buyers ask for it.
- You want a recommendation that fits your size — not the biggest package by default.
- You want things kept simple — your details, one payment, your certificate.
If that’s the kind of service you want, message us and we’ll begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does CAC registration cost for a beverage or fruit juice business in Taraba State? ₦35,500 all-inclusive for a Business Name, the same in every LGA. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.
What do I get for the ₦35,500? The name search and reservation, the completed CAC filing, the government fee, your Certificate of Registration (soft copy), a TIN and a CAC Status Report.
How long does it take, and how do I receive the certificate? Usually 5–7 working days. We send the soft copy to you on WhatsApp, and you print it locally.
Is a Business Name enough for a juice or drinks business? For a juice bar, depot, stall or small kitchen, usually yes. It gives you a legal name for receipts, supplier accounts and banking. Product registration for packaged drinks is a separate matter.
Does CAC registration give me a NAFDAC number? No. NAFDAC registers packaged products separately, with its own documents, laboratory tests, label review and facility inspection. CAC registration is one of the documents the process generally expects.
Do I need a Limited Liability Company to register a packaged juice with NAFDAC, and can I upgrade later? Guides to NAFDAC registration commonly recommend a company, so if you plan to bottle and sell your own branded product, ask NAFDAC what it requires and consider a Limited Liability Company from day one. If you are still starting out, you can begin with a Business Name and convert later, and we can help with that.
Can I register a juice bar or a mobile drink vendor? Yes. Fixed shops, stalls and mobile or event drink vendors are all registered the same way. You will need a business address in Taraba State.
Can I register a business that makes zobo, kunu or tiger-nut drink? Yes. Describe the nature of business broadly, such as production and sale of local drinks and beverages. Any product registration is handled separately.
Do packaged water producers register the same way? Yes, for the CAC part. Packaged water has its own NAFDAC facility and product requirements, which are separate from this registration.
Can a soft drink depot or distributor register? Yes. Depots, distributors and wholesalers of drinks register the same way, and you can describe both buying and supplying in the nature of business.
Can I sell tea and herbal drinks under the same name? Yes. Include them in your description of the business. Herbal or health claims on a product may attract their own regulatory requirements.
Does registering my business name also protect my brand name or logo? No. A CAC business name and a trademark are different things. Trademark registration is a separate process at the Trade Marks Registry, and we do not include it in the ₦35,500.
Do you register businesses outside Jalingo? Yes. We cover all 16 Taraba LGAs, from Ibi and Wukari to Takum and Sardauna, at the same price and turnaround.
Do I need a shop or production address before I apply? You need a business address in Taraba State and its LGA for the application. If you are still arranging premises, send the address you plan to use.
Can I run more than one outlet under a single business name? One registration covers your business as a whole, and you can describe it broadly. Permits for each location may still apply, so confirm them for every outlet.
Can I open a business bank account with the certificate? Yes. A CAC certificate is one of the main documents banks ask for, along with your ID and other details.
Is the TIN included? Yes. A Tax Identification Number comes with the ₦35,500.
Will the certificate help me supply shops, schools or event caterers? Buyers and organisations often want proof of registration before ordering regularly or in bulk, so the certificate is a useful document to have. It does not guarantee any order.
What if my proposed business name isn’t available? Send a backup name and we’ll check it straight away. Having two or three options ready keeps things moving.
Do I need to file anything with CAC in later years? Registered businesses must file annual returns. It is a small, separate step, and we can help when the time comes.
Got a drinks brand or juice bar name in mind? Send it to us on WhatsApp → and we’ll start with the name search.
