Business Name or Limited Liability Company for a Bookshop?
| Business Name | Limited Liability Company | |
|---|---|---|
| Price (all-inclusive) | ₦35,500 | ₦65,500 |
| Protects personal assets? | No | Yes |
| What you receive | Certificate + Status Report + TIN | Certificate + Status Report + Memart + TIN |
| Typically suits | Single bookshops, stationery stores, print shops and small wholesalers | Larger distributors, multi-branch operators, and owners with partners or investors |
A Business Name is usually enough when you run a shop or print centre under your own name and need a registered name for invoices, supplier accounts and a bank account. A Limited Liability Company becomes worth considering when you grow into wholesale supply, share ownership, or bring in investors, since the business then stands apart from your personal assets. Many owners start with a Business Name and upgrade later.

An Education Emergency and the Bookshop Counter
In November 2023, Governor Dauda Lawal declared a state of emergency in education, and reforms have continued into 2026. For the book trade, the visible parts are the supply of books and the exam calendar. In February 2024 the governor flagged off the distribution of 242,176 textbooks, 8,210 library items and other materials to 250 public primary and junior secondary schools, supplied through UBEC and UNICEF. The state’s education commissioner has since put the total textbooks distributed across primary schools at 485,746, and the First Lady’s initiative gave 50,000 exercise books to pupils in 30 schools across the 14 LGAs. New curricula have also been distributed to selected schools in three LGAs.
These materials go to schools directly, so a bookshop’s customers are largely the ones outside those distributions, such as private and Islamic schools, exam candidates, offices and families. We found no data on how large that retail market is, so ask the schools and customers around you. On exams, the state government says no public school sat the 2023 WAEC because fees went unpaid, and that it later settled the debts, after which WAEC and NECO released results withheld for years. CAC registration is separate from all of this: it gives your shop a registered name for invoices to schools, supplier accounts and a bank account.
Registering Bookshops Across All 14 Zamfara LGAs
The price, documents and turnaround are the same wherever your shop is. We register bookshops and stationery businesses in every Local Government Area of Zamfara State:
Gusau and nearby LGAs
- Gusau — the state capital, with bookshops, school-supply stores and print shops
- Bungudu, Maru and Chafe (also spelled Tsafe) — bookshops, stationery sellers and photocopy centres in the town centres
The north
- Kaura Namoda and Zurmi — stationery shops, booksellers and print centres in busy local centres
- Shinkafi and Birnin Magaji/Kiyaw — small bookshops, school-supply sellers and photocopy businesses
The west and south
- Talata Mafara, Bakura and Maradun — booksellers, stationery stores and business centres
- Gummi, Bukkuyum and Anka — small bookshops and school-supply stores in the smaller towns
If your shop is anywhere in Zamfara State, you’re covered.
When the Term Begins and the Shop Fills Up
A bookshop’s calendar runs on school terms and exam dates: the rush before term begins, parents with long lists, teachers asking for chalk and registers, candidates hunting for past questions, offices running low on paper. Between rushes there is stock to count, orders to place and a photocopier that never seems to rest. Registering the business name is one job you can hand over completely. Once it is done, your shop trades under a recognised name on receipts, supplier invoices and bank paperwork.
Is This Right for Your Business?
We’re not the right fit for everyone, and we’d rather say so — here’s who usually benefits most from working with us:
- Your counter is busy with pupils buying exercise books, teachers asking for chalk and a customer waiting at the photocopier — and CAC’s portal can’t compete with that queue.
- You’re planning more than a shop — supplying private and Islamic schools in bulk, adding printing and a business centre, or opening a second branch.
- You want a recommendation that fits your size — not the biggest package by default.
- You want a process without back-and-forth — send your details once, pay once, and there are no surprise charges afterwards.
If that’s the kind of service you want, message us and we’ll begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does CAC registration cost for a bookshop or stationery business in Zamfara State? ₦35,500 all-inclusive for a Business Name. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.
What do I get for the ₦35,500? The name search and reservation, the completed CAC filing, the government fee, your Certificate of Registration as a soft copy, a TIN and a CAC Status Report. Nothing is charged after the payment.
How long does registration take? Usually 5–7 working days once your details and payment are in.
Is the price the same in every LGA? Yes. The price, documents and turnaround are identical anywhere in Zamfara State.
Is a Business Name enough for a bookshop? For most owner-run bookshops, stationery stores and print shops, yes. It gives you the registered name you need to start. Copyright, procurement and premises matters are separate.
When does a Limited Liability Company make more sense? If you are building a larger distribution business, sharing ownership with partners, or an investor or large client wants a company structure, the LLC route is worth considering from day one.
Can I upgrade from a Business Name to a Limited Liability Company later? Yes. Many owners start with a Business Name and convert as the business grows. We can assist with the conversion.
Can I register a stationery shop? Yes. Stationery and school-supply shops register the same way as bookshops.
Can I register an Islamic or Arabic bookshop? Yes. Sellers of Quran, Islamiyya and other Islamic and Arabic books register under the same Business Name price.
Can I register an office-supply store? Yes. Stores selling paper, files, toner and office stationery register the same way.
Can I register a printing, photocopy or business centre? Yes. A print or business centre registers the same way. Describe the services in the nature of business.
Can wholesalers and distributors register? Yes. A business that supplies exercise books and stationery to shops and schools can be registered at the same price.
Can I register a business that sells exam materials and past questions? Yes. Describe what you sell in the nature of business. Copyright rules for the materials you sell are separate.
Can an art and craft supplies business register? Yes. Art, craft and gift suppliers register the same way.
I sell books online or through WhatsApp. Can I register? Yes. You need a business address in a Zamfara State LGA, and a home address works. Tell us the LGA.
Does registration allow me to photocopy and sell books? No. CAC registration gives your business a registered name. Copying and selling copyrighted books needs the copyright owners’ permission and is handled separately.
Can I register to supply public schools or government offices? You can register the business, but supplying government bodies may involve separate procurement or registration requirements, which we do not handle.
If government gives textbooks to schools, is there still a market for a bookshop? We found no data on that, so we cannot say. Government distributions go to public schools, and private and Islamic schools, exam candidates, offices and families are customers outside them. Ask the schools and customers near you.
Does CAC registration cover an exam-registration or testing centre? No. Operating one may need separate accreditation from the relevant examination body. That is outside CAC registration.
Do I need a shop before I register? You need a business address and the LGA. A shop, stall or home address works. If you are still arranging a space, send the address you plan to use.
Do I need insurance or fire-safety arrangements? They are separate from CAC. A shop stocking paper and books may want cover for its stock, and an insurer and your local fire service can advise.
I run more than one shop. Do I register each? One registration covers your business as a whole. Any shop approvals are separate, so confirm what each location needs.
Can I put a bookshop, stationery and printing under one name? Yes. Describe the nature of business broadly, for example “bookshop, stationery and printing services”. Some activities may have their own approvals.
Do I need an agreement with publishers or distributors? Only if you want to buy on credit or become an authorised seller of particular titles. Those agreements are with the publishers or distributors and are separate from CAC.
Will the certificate help with schools and offices? Schools and organisations often ask for proof of registration before placing regular orders, so the certificate is a useful document to have. It does not guarantee any order.
Can I open a business bank account with the certificate? Yes. A CAC certificate is one of the main documents banks ask for, along with your ID and other details.
Is the TIN included? Yes. A Tax Identification Number is part of what you receive for the ₦35,500.
Will I get a printed certificate, and how is it delivered? You receive a soft copy on WhatsApp, which you can print locally whenever you like.
What if my first-choice name isn’t available? Send a backup name and we will check it right away. Having two or three options ready keeps things moving.
What should I write as the nature of business? Keep it simple and broad, such as “bookshop and stationery sales” or “printing and photocopying services”. We can help you word it when you send your details.
Do I need to file anything with CAC in later years? Yes, registered businesses file annual returns. It is a small, separate step and we can help with it when the time comes.
Do you register bookshops outside Gusau? Yes. We register bookshops and stationery businesses in all 14 LGAs of Zamfara State, from Talata Mafara and Kaura Namoda to Anka and Shinkafi, at the same price and turnaround.
I publish my own books or notes. Does registration protect them? No. CAC registration gives your business a registered name, while copyright is a separate matter handled by the copyright authorities.
Do I have to visit an office to register? No. You send your details and documents by WhatsApp, and we handle the rest of the process.
