Zamfara’s Market Towns, the SABER Grants and the New Tax Rules

Trade in Zamfara State runs through its market towns. State announcements have named markets such as Gusau, Talata Mafara, Shinkafi, Kasuwar Daji in Kaura Namoda, Nasarawar Burkullu in Bukkuyum and Nasarawar Godel in Birnin Magaji. Britannica describes Gusau as a collecting point for cotton and groundnuts, with local trade in millet, sorghum, rice, cowpeas and beans. That is a lot of goods changing hands, from bulk grain to household supplies, and a lot of room for wholesalers, distributors and shop owners.

Two recent developments are worth knowing about. In September 2025 the state launched SABER (State Action on Business Enabling Reforms), described as a five-year, World Bank-supported programme. Reports said it would give ₦150,000 grants to 2,000 nano and micro businesses, ₦500,000 to 1,000 small and medium businesses and ₦5 million to 60 medium and large businesses. The reports we found did not state eligibility rules, so check the programme’s own criteria; a CAC certificate does not guarantee that you qualify. Separately, Zamfara was reported as an early adopter of Nigeria’s new tax laws ahead of the 1 January deadline, with leaders saying the reforms would reduce overlapping charges on small businesses. Tax rules are outside this registration, so confirm what applies to your business.

For a shop, a stall or a small wholesale operation, a Business Name usually does the job: it gives you a legal trading name for invoices and a bank account. A company starts to make sense when your stock and credit exposure grow, when you share ownership, or when a supplier or investor wants a company structure. Many traders start with the Business Name and upgrade later.

What to Have on Hand

  1. Two proposed business names, in order of preference
  2. A valid ID — National ID (NIN), international passport or driver’s licence
  3. A passport photograph
  4. Your business address in Zamfara State, with the LGA; a shop, stall or warehouse address is fine
  5. A phone number and email address
  6. Nature of business, described simply, for example “general merchandise and wholesale” or “provisions, household goods and general trading”
  7. If you choose a Limited Liability Company instead: names, ID and details of the directors and shareholders

How We Get You Registered

  1. Name search. We check CAC’s public portal for availability.
  2. Reservation. Once your name is confirmed available, we reserve it.
  3. Application. We complete the form with your business details and Zamfara address.

  6. Delivery. Your Certificate of Registration, TIN and Status Report arrive, usually within 5–7 working days.

Your part ends with the details and one payment; getting the file to a certificate is our job.

Stock, Stalls and Market Day

Trading is a business of small decisions made all day: what to reorder before the shelf runs bare, which customer is buying on credit, how many cartons to keep for the next retailer who stops by. On market day the pace doubles. Customers queue, suppliers deliver and your phone keeps ringing. That is exactly why registration is better handed over. Once done, your trading name appears on invoices, supplier accounts and your bank details, and you spend your day on the counter, not on an online form.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does CAC registration cost for a trading business in Zamfara State? ₦35,500 all-inclusive for a Business Name, the same in every LGA. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.

What is included in the ₦35,500? The name search and reservation, the completed CAC application, CAC’s government fee, your Certificate of Registration (soft copy), a TIN and a CAC Status Report.

Is a Business Name enough for a shop or wholesale business? For most owner-run shops, stalls and small wholesale operations, yes. It gives you a legal name for trading, invoices and a bank account.

When would a Limited Liability Company make sense? If your stock and credit exposure are growing, you share ownership, or a supplier or investor wants a company structure. Otherwise the Business Name is the cheaper starting point.

Can partners register a trading business together? Yes, a Business Name can be registered by one person or by partners. If you want the business to stand apart from your personal assets, consider the Limited Liability Company.

Do I need registration to trade in a market stall? CAC registration gives you the legal name. Stall allocation, permits and levies are handled separately with your local government or the market authority.

What address do I use for a stall? Use the market or shop address where you trade, with the LGA. If you work from several spots, give the main one.

I don’t have a shop yet. Can I still register? You need an address in Zamfara State and its LGA for the application. If you are still arranging premises, send the address you plan to use.

Do I need a separate registration for a second shop or warehouse? One registration covers your business as a whole. Local permits are often tied to each premises, so confirm what applies to every location.

Can one name cover both retail and wholesale? Yes. Describe the nature of business broadly, for example “general merchandise, retail and wholesale”, so one registration covers both.

What should I write as my nature of business? Keep it simple and broad, such as “general merchandise and trading” or “provisions, household goods and wholesale”. Send what you sell and we will word it correctly.

Can I register a business that imports or exports goods? Yes, you can describe import and export in the nature of business. Importing itself involves Customs registration and product approvals, which are separate from CAC.

Does CAC registration cover NAFDAC or other product approvals? No. Products such as packaged food, drinks, toiletries and cosmetics have their own requirements with NAFDAC and other bodies.

Will a certificate help me supply schools, offices or government bodies? Institutions often ask for proof of registration before dealing with a supplier, so it is a useful document to hold. It does not guarantee any contract.

Will it help me buy on credit from distributors or manufacturers? Suppliers commonly like to see proof of registration before extending terms. It helps you answer that request, but any credit decision is the supplier’s.

Does registering qualify me for state grants such as SABER? Not automatically. Check the programme’s published criteria; a certificate does not guarantee eligibility or payment.

Can I register if I sell mainly online? Yes. Use your business address, or the address you ship from, and describe the nature of business as retail or online trading.

I already trade under a name without registering. Can I register it? Send us the name. If it is available on CAC’s register, we can reserve it; if not, we will help you choose an alternative.

Can I use words like “Global” or “International” in my name? CAC restricts some words, and we check this during the name search. Send your preferred names and we will tell you what is available.

Can I open a bank account with the certificate? Yes. A CAC certificate is one of the main documents banks ask for when opening a business account, along with your ID and other details.

Is the TIN included, and does it cover all my tax obligations? The TIN is included in the ₦35,500. Other tax registrations and obligations, including state-level ones, are separate.

Are there CAC filings in later years? Registered businesses file annual returns. It is a small, separate step, and we can help when it falls due.

Do you register businesses outside Gusau? Yes. We register businesses across all 14 LGAs in Zamfara State at the same price and turnaround.

Is the price the same in Kaura Namoda, Anka or Shinkafi as in Gusau? Yes. ₦35,500 and 5–7 working days apply wherever in the state your business is based.

What if my first-choice name isn’t available? Send a second name and we will check it straight away. Having two or three options ready keeps things moving.

Can I upgrade from a Business Name to a Limited Liability Company later? Yes. Many traders start with a Business Name and convert as the business grows. We can help with the conversion.

What documents do I need for a Limited Liability Company? The same basics as for a Business Name, plus the names, ID and details of each director and shareholder.

How do I receive my certificate, and can I print it? It is sent to you as a soft copy on WhatsApp. You can print it locally whenever you need a hard copy.
