Separate From This Registration
Registering with CAC gives your facility a legal name. It does not authorise anyone to treat patients, and it does not stand in for the approvals below, which are handled with the relevant bodies:
- Printed copies of your certificate (you receive a soft copy and print it wherever is convenient)
- Registration of the facility with the Rivers State Ministry of Health under the state’s Facility Registration Law, and the Certificate of Standards that follows, which is renewed after annual inspection
- Current practising licences for your clinical staff: MDCN for doctors and dentists, NMCN for nurses and midwives, and MLSCN or PCN where you run a laboratory or dispensary
- Authorisation from the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority if you operate X-ray or other radiation equipment
- A medical waste management arrangement for sharps, dressings and other clinical waste
- Building, planning and fire-safety approvals for the premises
- Onboarding as a provider under the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme or with HMOs, each with its own criteria
- State and federal tax obligations that apply to your facility
- Opening a business bank account with your chosen bank once the certificate is in hand
- Annual returns filing in later years, a small separate step we can also help with
Business Name vs. Limited Liability Company
| Business Name | Limited Liability Company | |
|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive cost | ₦35,500 | ₦65,500 |
| Protects your personal assets | No | Yes |
| What you receive | Certificate + Status Report + TIN | Certificate + Status Report + Memart + TIN |
| A sensible choice for | Owner-run clinics, small maternity homes and modest nursing homes | Multi-doctor hospitals, facilities with co-owners or investors, larger in-patient operations |
A Business Name usually does the job for an owner-run clinic or a small home that needs a legal name for invoices, patient billing and a bank account. Once a facility has beds, several partners or outside money behind it, a Limited Liability Company is often the better fit, because patient care carries real liability and the company stands apart from your personal assets. Many owners begin with a Business Name and convert later.
What to Have on Hand
- Two proposed business names, in order of preference
- A valid ID: National ID (NIN), international passport or driver’s license
- A passport photograph
- Your business address in Rivers State, including the LGA
- A phone number and email address
- Nature of business, described plainly, such as “hospital and clinic services” or “nursing home and maternity care”
- If you choose a Limited Liability Company: names, ID and details of the directors and shareholders
How We Get You Registered
- We check availability of your proposed names on CAC’s public search portal.
- We reserve the name as soon as one is confirmed available.
- We complete the application using your business, owner and Rivers State address details.
- You upload your ID and passport photograph; a clear phone photo works.
- You make one payment of ₦35,500, covering every item listed above.
- Your Certificate of Registration, TIN and Status Report arrive, usually within 5–7 working days.
Beyond that first message and a single payment, there’s nothing left for you to chase up.
What Rivers State Expects From a Health Facility
Healthcare in Rivers State is regulated in its own right. The Rivers State Ministry of Health is charged with registering and supervising both public and private health institutions, and facilities are expected to be registered under the Rivers State Facility Registration Law No. 2 of 2019. Registered facilities hold a Certificate of Standards, which is renewed after annual inspection and is meant to be displayed. At its third-quarter 2026 press briefing in Port Harcourt, the Ministry reported sealing 21 facilities across Port Harcourt City, Obio/Akpor, Ikwerre and Etche, and said it was starting a 2026 drive against facilities that skip the annual inspection and renewal. So the Certificate of Standards is a requirement operators are expected to take seriously, and a registered business name is the sensible first piece of paperwork behind it.
The state’s health insurance scheme adds a second reason to be properly set up. The Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP) has invited private facilities to apply as secondary providers, and its published criteria include a current Certificate of Standards from the Ministry, evidence of licensure for all health workers, an accident and emergency unit, a medical waste management system and minimum staffing of three medical officers, three nurses and two midwives, plus a one-time application and accreditation fee. CAC registration is not on that list and does not replace anything on it. What it gives you is the legal name your facility trades and applies under, and it is a step you can finish in days while the clinical requirements are being arranged. Check the current criteria with the programme before you apply.

The Work You Trained For Isn’t Filling In Forms
Nobody picks medicine or nursing because they dream of filling in online forms. Your days are ward rounds, a waiting room that fills before the doctor arrives, a drug store that needs restocking, antenatal Tuesdays, a theatre list and a nurse calling at 2 a.m. about a patient who needs a decision. A registered name is the piece of the business we can lift off that list entirely. Once it is done, your facility has a recognised name for patient invoices, supplier accounts, HMO paperwork and a business bank account, and you go back to patients.
Is This Right for Your Business?
We’re not the right fit for everyone, and we’d rather say so — here’s who usually benefits most from working with us:
- You spend your days on ward rounds, clinic queues, antenatal days and night-duty handovers, and the last thing you want to open between patients is CAC’s portal.
- You’re building from a one-doctor clinic toward a hospital with in-patient beds, a maternity wing or a nursing home, and eventually want to apply as a provider under the state’s health insurance scheme or with HMOs.
- You want honest advice, not an upsell — if a Business Name covers your stage, that’s what we’ll recommend.
- You want things kept simple — your details, one payment, your certificate.
If this describes you, we’d be glad to take the paperwork off your hands.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does CAC registration cost for a hospital or clinic in Rivers State? ₦35,500 all-inclusive for a Business Name, the same anywhere in Rivers State. A Limited Liability Company is ₦65,500 all-inclusive.
What does the ₦35,500 cover? The name search and reservation, the completed application, CAC’s official fee, your soft-copy Certificate of Registration, a TIN and a CAC Status Report.
Is a Business Name enough to open a clinic or small maternity home? For many owner-run facilities, yes. It gives you the registered name to trade under. Registering the facility with the Ministry of Health is a separate step.
Does CAC registration allow me to treat patients? No. Treating patients depends on professional licences such as MDCN for doctors and NMCN for nurses and midwives, along with the facility’s own approvals. CAC registration only establishes your business name and identity.
Does CAC registration replace registration with the Rivers State Ministry of Health? No. The Ministry registers and supervises health facilities and issues the Certificate of Standards, which is renewed after annual inspection. CAC gives you the business name you register under.
What is the Certificate of Standards? It is the certificate the Ministry of Health issues to registered facilities that meet the state’s minimum standards. The Ministry has told operators to display it, and it needs annual inspection and renewal. We do not process it for you.
Who is allowed to own or run a health facility? That is decided by the health regulators, not by CAC. Confirm ownership and supervision requirements with the Rivers State Ministry of Health before you apply for your facility registration.
Do nursing homes and maternity homes register the same way? Yes. Describe the nature of your business in plain words, such as “nursing home and elderly care” or “maternity and antenatal care”. State approvals for these services are separate.
Can I register a hospital together with a pharmacy or laboratory under one name? You can describe the business broadly. A dispensary or laboratory has its own licensing, with PCN covering pharmacy premises and MLSCN covering medical laboratories, so plan for those separately.
Will CAC registration get my facility into the state health insurance scheme? No. The programme’s published criteria for private facilities focus on a current Certificate of Standards, staff licences, emergency capability, staffing levels and a one-time fee. CAC registration gives you a legal name to apply under, but it is not on that list.
I don’t have a building yet. Can I still register? You need a business address in Rivers State and its LGA for the application. If you are still arranging premises, send the address you plan to use.
Do you register facilities in riverine areas such as Andoni and Opobo/Nkoro? Yes. We register facilities across all of Rivers State, from Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor to Andoni, Bonny and Ahoada, at the same price and turnaround.
Can I upgrade from a Business Name to a Limited Liability Company later? Yes, and many facilities do as they add beds, partners or investors. We can assist with the conversion.
When does it make sense to start with a Limited Liability Company? If a hospital has several co-owners, an investor wants a company structure, or you plan a larger in-patient operation from the start, the company route is worth considering from day one.
Is the TIN included? Yes. Your Tax Identification Number is part of what you receive for the ₦35,500.
Can I open a business bank account with the certificate? Yes. A CAC certificate is one of the main documents banks ask for when opening a business account, along with your ID and other details.
Will I have to file anything with CAC in later years? Registered businesses file annual returns. It is a small, separate step and we can help when the time comes.
What if the name I want is already taken? Send a backup name and we will check it straight away. Having two or three options ready keeps things moving.
