Hotels in Zamfara: Guest Checks and the Gusau Hotel Question

Two public records say a lot about accommodation in Zamfara. In August 2022, the then governor, Bello Matawalle, ordered hotel operators to scrutinise guests by means of valid identification before accommodating them, saying the government was worried about hotels being used by criminals and warning that violators could be shut down and prosecuted. We could not confirm whether that order is still enforced in the same form under the current administration, so ask the state ministry or the police what guest-registration practice applies to your property.

The second record is the state’s own landmark hotel. The old Gusau Hotel, originally Gusau Motel, was demolished, and a contract of about ₦1.15 billion for its reconstruction was awarded in July 2020 under the state’s then culture and tourism ministry. A 2024 investigation reported the project still unfinished, and the commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Tourism named completing the Gusau hotel project among the ministry’s proposed 2024 works. The current status is unconfirmed. Tourism now sits under that Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, and we did not find a published Zamfara equivalent of the hotel licensing laws some other states have, so check with the ministry whether a licence applies to you.
