Sharia, Hisbah and the Rules for Entertainment in Zamfara

Zamfara is where Nigeria’s modern Sharia push began. In January 2000 it became the first state to implement the Islamic legal code, and that code bans the sale and possession of alcohol. As of 2016, research on the state’s hisbah described it as having foundations in state law, a board with state-wide powers and state funding, and a 2001 state law covering socio-economic, moral, religious and cultural reforms. In the early years, hisbah members entered hotels, bars and other premises selling alcohol and destroyed what they found, and consignments of beer were burned. In August 2023, the state government said it would revive and improve the application of Islamic law. Hisbah groups across Sharia states have also targeted the playing of music as un-Islamic.

What does this mean in practice?
